Member Posts: 1040 Location: Stevens Point, WI | The first annual Minnesota Fishing Challenge presented by Mills Fleet Farm got underway this morning with eighty-seven two person teams taking to the waters of the Gull Lake Chain. The teams were able to take-off from any landing within the chain but tournament headquarters was out of Ernies on Gull where the weigh-in and other festivities took place. The anglers awoke with less than favorable wind conditions throughout the day but with the sun shining and the skies clear of rain, the wind was doable and the fish didn't seem to mind. Unlike most tournaments where anglers chase only one species, this format presented a unique challenge. The teams were able to catch and record fish for four different divisions; the walleye, the pike, the bass, and panfish. Each team could bring a limit of fish consisting of three walleyes, one pike, one bass, and three panfish. The winners collected merchandise prizes that included guided fishing trips, Frabill nets, lodging stays, rods and reels, Plano tackle boxes and Aqua-Vu certificates and other prizes. Honorary tournament director and fishing Hall of Famer Al Lindner was on hand supporting the Teen Challenge cause and spending time to meet and greet with people of all ages. Al's concept led to a very successful first annual event with plans already being made for the second annual Minnesota Fishing Challenge. Al's concept to involve churches brought many non-tournament anglers into the tournament game. Each team was asked to raise a minimum of $500. They easily eclipsed that by raising nearly $1,000 per team. The highest placing team consisting of Jamison Seiffert and Joshua Maxwell from Litchfield, MN who raised $5,370 to earn themselves a fishing trip with Al Lindner. The anglers raised a total of $85,000 to benefit Team Challenge. Teen Challenge is the most successful drug and alcohol rehabilitation program in the state with centers in Brainerd, Duluth, and Minneapolis. Teen Challenge has centers in all 50 states and 83 countries. A special thanks to professional anglers and guides Perry Good, Richie Boggs, WalleyeDan Eigen, Butch Blasing and Tim Anderson.
