Toxins in Lake Michigan fish linked to diabetes

CHICAGO (MCT) — This is a fish tale in which smaller is better than bigger, especially if the catch is to be eaten in any quantity.
That’s because a new study of Great Lakes boat captains over 15 years found a correlation between the chemical DDE and diabetes. Those who ate more fish had more DDE in their blood and were more likely to develop diabetes, according to results published in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives in July.
DDE is produced in the bodies of small bottom-feeding fish from ingesting the prevalent pesticide DDT. The chemical transfers to bigger fish when they eat smaller fish and then accumulates in the fat and liver of people who eat lots of what they catch.
‘‘Sports fishermen are at the top of the food chain,’’ said Bruce Fowler, assistant director of science at the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which funded the study, along with the federal Environmental Protec
tion Agency.
Charter boat captains tend to catch and eat more fish than the average recreational fisherman. But the captains care about their health, said Henry Anderson of the Wisconsin Division of Public Health, who managed the study.
‘‘Many saw that their levels were high from the study and they cut back on their intake of fish,’’ he said.
Exactly how DDE may lead to diabetes is unknown. Another pesticide, Agent Orange, can cause diabetes, but it’s believed to do so in a different way than DDE, said Mary Turyk, an assistant professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago and lead author of the study.
DDE is a byproduct of the pesticide DTT, which was used in farming in the Great Lakes region. It was banned in the United States 37 years ago but continues to be a worrisome pollutant because it is used in other countries to combat malaria and because it remains in the lakes due to the slow turnover of
water.
‘‘DDT gets thrown up in the atmosphere and can be deposited by rain and snow attached to particles which settle at the bottom of the lakes,’’ Fowler said. ‘‘The toxins are released by Asia and settle in North America. The jet stream carries a lot of things besides temperature and rain.’’
There is reason for hope, scientists say.
‘‘The good news is that levels in fish and in people have been going down because we have been cleaning up the lakes,’’ Anderson said.
Fisherman Todd Panagopalores, who often can be found at Northerly Island, said he and others worry about what they eat and keep only the smaller fish because they know the bigger fish accumulate the most harmful toxins. That advice is contained in guidelines from the Illinois Department of Public Health fish advisory, which are based on a monitoring program that test for 14 environmental chemicals in fish.

The advisory sets limits of fish consumption based on levels of PCBs, which can cause cancer, and mercury, which causes nerve damage and birth defects. Though tests for DDE are included, they do not contribute to the advisory because the levels found in local fish do not exceed health-based guidelines, said Ken Runkle, senior environmental toxicologist from the Illinois Department of Public Health.

Thanks Dennis good read! interesting they cant find the link between Diabedes and a charter capton! How bout this one... Did you take a look at the average charter captain lately? just walk along the docks in the morning! There 75 to 150 lbs over weight! this is on average and by no means a shot at our good charter captains we all love! Face it! Here is there day in a nut shell.. Get up early!, go to the bait shop on the water and grab a doenut or 3 and a hot cup of coffee wile your clients buy licences and stumble around still in a fog... go out fishing with coolers full of beer , soda and the best sandwiches made in town .... come in.. clean fish refresh yourself ....re-load the coolers with more refreshments and go out again for the late afternoon evening bite..... then come home late and your wife has a plate made for you in the fridge from dinner.... eat go to bed and start over agian in 6 hours. HMMM? more diabetes? I dont know why? Must be DDT! but i would apply for another grant and go back to the drawing board... im sure you will find out that DDT also causes skin cancer.. heart desease, and gives you a higher risk of being lost in a storm in a ship wreck.... oh well .. money well spent though... good work...

Oh one more thing... if your standing in front of two charter boats with captains standing on deck and your looking to hire? who you gonna pick! my money is on the guy who looks like he has been eating well! lol... for sure!

Hey Dennis , I know im a bit skeptical , very much sarcastic, a poor speller and gramatical ship wreck. sometimes a bit of an Azz! but i want to thank you and others like you that dig up all the articals and interesting tid bits and take the time to post them so we all have something to read and talk about.... some go over bigger than others but keep them comming. I am a glass half empty kind of guy when it comes to faith in our current political system and the info put to paper these days. To me this study was a waist of money and im sure the follow up grant given to the same group of brilliant minds will be used with the same good intentions yet result in a a brilliant new link of some sort to something... .... by the way school started.. If you have a 4th grader needing to do an experiment or study... Try this one.... here is your cover statment in bold... FISHING LINE LINKED TO HEART ATTACKS! Studies found that poople who fish 3 days or more per week are at the highest risk for DEATH! Studies showed that after looking at 5000 heart attack deaths over the last year that those who spent large amounts of time exposed to both fishing and serprizingly Golfing died sooner! NEVER Mind the fact that the only people who can fish or golf 3 or more days a week are RETIRED and already 60-80 years old and are the bulk of the Heart attacks just show the statistical data and cut a deal with a bunch of pharmacutical distributors and investors , make an infomercial explaining your find and sell a pill people can take before they go golfing and fishing to cut back there risk.... hey just change the asperin to a diferent shape and make it say orange.... sell the things for 5 bucks a pill and make millions.... other advantages are relief from head aches ... and longer lasting wood... if longer wood lasts more than 4 hours consult your doctor. if uncontroled bleeding because of thined blood continues after getting a hook in your finger stop sucking on it and put a band aid on it!

Or another option might be to write your post in MS-Word first then, copy and paste into the post.

But if I get a vote - I say don't change. Reading your posts make me feel like I work for the CIA. I love cracking codes and government work.

Bradley,

This one is for you (don't read it rich)

A college professor was conducting an experiment on frogs. In the lab, he had a frog in a dissecting pan. He told the frog to jump, which he did. The professor noted in his journal that the frog responds to verbal commands. The professor then proceeded to cut one of the frogs front legs off. He again commanded the frog to jump, which he did. albeit a somewhat lopsided jump. The professor noted in his journal that the frog continued to respond to verbal commands.
The professor proceeded to cut the frog's other front leg off, and again told it to jump. The frog jumped, and promptly hit itself on his head when it landed. Another notation of following verbal commands. Next, the professor cut off one of the frog's back legs, and commanded the frog to jump. With one leg remaining, the frog attempted a jump. This, too, was noted in the professor's journal. Finally the professor cut the remaining leg from the frog, and commanded the poor creature to jump. The frog remained still. Once again, the command to jump was given, and once again the frog did not move. The professor wrote in his journal...after removing all four legs, the frog became deaf......

Interesting, Dennis this seems to be a case or perspectives... i would have guessed a sharper individual would have realized he had found a rare endangered eeeer indangered ummm(a little help Rich?) speicies here! Traced the swamp this unique little Deaf frog came from and tested for polutants from a near by industrial plant! then stopped all future expansion anounced the aria as a sanctuary and called the DNR to start an investigation of the soil and water. Poor frog is True! poor little bugger took one for the greator good. Im serprized that after chopping its lil legs off the brilliant mind didnt recognize it looked kinda like a Gobie! possibly a link to the fact that Gobies may not have been transported here from another far away place but have evolved from our own Deaf Frogs that we didnt know existed in the first place. Its amaizing what a few individuals on walleyesFirst can do when we bring it up and dig for the truth... outstanding work!
