Got out on the ice for the first time yesterday. Fished out in front of the 'facility' in North Asylum bay. Marked a lot of fish in 14'-15' but only managed to ice a few smallish perch. Moved into shallow water and didn't mark anything -- the water was pretty dirty in 6'-8' feet.

Ice was in good shape but still only 4" in most places.

Picked up a few on the south end in 10' of water. Had to work for them. Biggest crappie came on a tip-up, otherwise the rest I got jigging. Samllest gil is 7-1/2".

Nice catch Dave. I'm on my way out right now to hunt for the elusive perch. Not too optimistic but you never know...

Went out from Payne's Point this afternoon but there is an open, working crack about 1/3 of a mile straight out from the club landing that I didn't want to cross -- probably could have skipped over it but it it was good 4"-6" wide and you never know how big it will be on the way in.

Circled around to Fresh Air and drove out between Haystack and Mansurs. Smooth traveling. Marked a few fish and had a few sniffers jigging but nothing too active. I had one tip-up that got hit 10-12 times but they'd take 6" and spit it out. Didn't put any fish the ice today.

I didn't drive around much because I still need to build a little more confidence in the ice, However, if I would've been really motivated to do so I think I would've been fine -- 14" of ice as measured with a tape measure.

Was out early for the sunrise smallie bite and it was there like clockwork. Four fish (15"-18") in the 30 minute stretch between 7:20 and 8:50 -- not a mark before or after. Gold hammered Angle Eye Jr. w/ a minnow head in 15' on the edge of a reef.

I'll be out tomorrow roaming the mud looking for the elusive walleye.
