I have a 1999 merc kicker. My current prop is way to steep, intended for a rowboat, not my 17' aluminum smokercraft with full console. I am looking at prop options to slow me down enough to pull crawler harnesses and to allow me to rev up the rpms and clean out the carbon.

I am looking a solas props, 7 pitch? does this make sense? They boat guy suggested a $140 ss prop - seemed like overkill. Other suggestions would be appreciated.

Try a Pirana propeller, they are "plastic" but are very durable. I have had a 5.5 pitch on my 9.9 Bigfoot for years with no problems. Also priced alot less.

Thanks for the suggestion. Is the 5.5 pitch a good choice for a kicker motor?

I have run a 9X7 on my 15 hp and found that I greatly improved my speed control (down lower) when I went to a 10X5 4 blade on a heavy 19' aluminum... BTW I run aluminum props on the kicker and don't se the need for a SS.

I ended up buying a 5.5 pitch aluminum prop for $95. It gives perfect low end speed and revs high enough in rpms to clean out the engine at the end of the day. Bought it from merten marine in Oshkosh - great place btw.
