Is this common? My friend invited me to go fishing with him this past Sunday in his boat, we set up near shore and we caught and released over 15 Walleyes in the 8-10 inch range, nothing over 10 inches. From where we were we couuld see this older guy fishing from the dock about 60 feet away, he caught and kept about 25 walleyes and from 60 feet away, it was clear to see that all were about the same size, 8-10 inches. I think what bothered me the most was that my friend told me that he knew the guy and that he was retired and fishes every day. We watched as his wife came out on the dock with a yellow bag and took all the fish back into the house and he kept fishing. She looked at me as if to say, "why you looking at us, nothing is going on here". By the way, when he put the first Walleye in the basket, it had a dozen or so small fish in it already. My friend asked me not to say anything, but I hope that this is not a common pratice with people that fish from a dock and take advantage when no one is looking.

Member Posts: 2567 Location: Manitowoc, WI | Guest, I hope it is not common, and, in my opinion, I would take about 10 seconds of my day to phone the DNR poachers hotline and turn him in. As stewarts and guardians of a world class fishery, and someone who remembers what it was like to struggle to catch just a few walleyes not too long ago, I feel it's our duty to do whatever it takes within legal means to protect this fishery and make sure those who overbag are punished. It's my goal to ensure that my kids and their kids have the opportunity to enjoy fishing and. selectively, harvest a few fish for the table as desired. I would also add that if you are not comfortable doing this I would be willing to do it for you, if you want to pass the exact information on to me. I can be reached at [email protected].

I second Jerry's comment. The DNR hotline number is in my phone. That aside, are you sure he was bagging walleyes and not perch or something else? take care, Jim O

If your friend says he needs the meat, remind him that his friend the poacher lives on the water and pays lots of taxes to be there, thus he is not poor, he is just a pig. Bust this scum bum. This is not acceptable and a huge message needs to go out to everyone soon. There are ALOT of game hogs on our system and this one needs his wings clipped, ZERO TOLERANCE!!

Member Posts: 141 Location: Oshkosh, WI | but someone was looking - you. I can understand being really uncomfortable with the situation - I'd call next time though. When people violate they are playing a different game - beating the law. It is not about meat; it is about greed and the thrill of beating the system.

this makes me sick! and if my buddy took me to that spot and asked me not to say anything i would be just as pissed at him! not that there is any justification for over baggin by a fish or two or the guy enjoys his dock and walks down in the morning and evening on the same day once in a wile. where you can stop yourself from making the call because your not sure of a violation. This seems to be cut and dried full out poaching and not just to feed your starving children! take someone else fishing off that dock that will make the call if you dont want too! i spend 50 to 100 bucks it seems to go fishing for a day on baggo. HELL MY FAVORITE LAUNCH ON THE EAST SHORE CHARGES 7.00 $ TO PUT THE BOAT IN!!!! IF IM FORTUNATE ENOUGH TO GET MY FIVE AND MAYBE ANOTHER 5 WITH MY STILL COST MORE THEN TENDERLINE! FU** THIS SO CALLED BUDDY SAYING DONT TURN HIM IN! DO THE RIGHT THING! YOU COULD BE TALKIN ABOUT THOUSANDS OF FISH WITH THIS GUY! THINK ABOUT IT! YOUR FISHING A SPOT WHERE YOU CATCH A FISH ALMOST ON EVERY CAST ON SOME DAYS. WHAT KIND OF LOAD IS HE BRINGING IN? EMAIL ME ILL SET UP IN FRONT OF THAT PLACE FISHING AND ILL MAKE THE CALL IF I SEE IT FOR MY SELF.

Member Posts: 181 Location: Manawa Wiscowsin | I recall one poacher on Bago about 30 years ago. When someone finally called the DNR on him they found the fillets from over 500 walleyes and sauger in his freezer and over 100 more walleye and sauger in a large live box under his dock. He was a regular at the old Fishtale Inn by Calumet County park. He hated the DNR and actually believed that he had the right to catch and keep as many fish as he wanted. I'm glad he got caught and would have turned him in if I had known about his poaching earlier.
