Is it common to have very stiff steering when bringing the boat up on plane?
I don't ever recall this being the case but its been a few years since I have run a standard outboard engine. The past couple years I have been driving surface drive motors and, well they're an entirely different beast.

I just picked up my Tuffy and took it for a test run and I noticed the steering was very stiff during the hole shot and even after bringing it up on plane, especially to the port side. She also seemed to list a little to the port side. Once I trimmed it up a bit it got much better but still seems a little excessive.

Any input would be appreciated. I plan on taking it to the Marina down in davenport and have them look at the motor position on the transom, the prop and hopefully get it handling better.

I would have to say mine is a bit stiff on take off the amount force generated at acceleration is allot plus with all the hull in water, that is allot of force. Way better than cable, it is only hydraulic not power steering

Yes, this is normal.. Your steering will be stiffer during hole shot.
Once the boat is up on top the steering load is far less

Thanks for the input. I took the new rig out for a "get to know you ride" on the Mississippi River down at Sabula yesterday Nov 28th. The temps were decent about 42 degrees so I figured I would stay out of the deer woods and get some Tuffy Time. After playing with the hole shot and getting used to trimming this motor up I am quite happy with the performance and steering as well as speed. I was seeing 45-46 mph at around 5800 - 5900 rpm .

When I first tested it, I was a bit tentative coming from a Surface drive boat and motor. All I can say now is wow....I love this boat. It was very easy to get her in the sweet spot and keep her there even backing down to 3500 rpm. The Suzi has a ton of torque and threw me and my son gear trolling motor,2 batteries, charger and half tank of gas out of the hole in about 3 seconds . I am very pleased with my new Tuffy. Glad I found this site and all the info about the Tuffy line of boats.
