I just bought a 681 VS 98' Ranger looking to put a kicker motor but having a hard time with Ranger on what to use. Please help if you have owned or have this boat on what I should use. I fish twin city lakes that are Elec. only. Thanks

I'm a bit confused. You state you are fishing electric only lakes, just drop the trolling motor down. No kicker plate required. I had the exact boat with a 135 OptiMax and never needed a trolling motor, always used the main. If you want to slow down tilt the motor or use a drift sock. You will be surprised how slow you can go.

You will love that boat!! I regret selling mine all the time.

I can only use elec. on city lakes so if i want to go for 10 hours on just elec. i want a back elec motor to use . I thought a lot of walleye fisherman back troll and would have a 9.9 kicker on. Just wanted to know what other fisherman had used, I love the boat! Looking forward to the next ten years on the boat. Thanks

For that rig I'd use a bow mount. Kicker on the rear would allow backtrolling, but the idea there is to go very slowly.

For the kicker motor - I've used a Panther until Evinrude came out with the new 15hpHO E-Tec with Tilt and trim. I also have had Minnkota 101 Vantages that allow you to both back and forward troll - for that you just use a fixed mounting bracket.

Good Luck!

Had the same boat with a kicker. They use to use a panther like lift made by Minn Kota on this boat. You will not use a kicker to back troll, to much weight on the Low riding transom and impossible to steer in most any conditions. Only used it to go forward in rough conditions pulling spinners or using boards in all conditions. Bow Mount Electric handled most of the conditions otherwise. Transom isn't made to handle kicker< no way to use bolts for bottom 2 holes. Have to use anchors in the fiberglass, no way to get to the holes on the bottom

To take the story a step farther. The Minn Kota lift was installed by Ranger when the Boat was ordered. After discussions with Ranger Reps when the bottom 2 Screws worked their way loose on this lift, I was told this Boat's Transom wasn't made for a kicker. They said to use anchors like you use in concrete blocks to hold the lift on the transom. If you take out the back rt battery in this boat and look down to the backside of the Transom, you will see there isn't anyway to fasten the Kicker or the lift on the bottom. Also with a kicker on this transom and as narrow as this bost is (78"), this is a lot of weight on the back end. Does make it a fun challenge to keep on plane though. Just a story, Tex.
