I'm looking at buying a 2008 boat with a 2008 90 hp Yamaha 4-stroke that the owner tells me has around 400 hours on it, which is a bit concerning. However, he said the majority of the hours were spent trolling at 2.5 mph. Should I be concerned? How much wear and tear is done to a motor of that size while trolling?

This would potentially be my first boat, so I'm not real knowledgeable, I'd appreciate any advice you could provide.

Thanks!

Mat (rydthe9) is a friend of mine so any help you can give him would be appreciated. I thought 400 hours was a lot and that he might want to have the compression checked. What do you all think?

I put 130-150 a year on my 4 stroke tiller and it runs like a dream. I did have a powerhead issue on the 4 stroke, but that was a fluke and was taken care of by Merc. I think you'll find a lot more hours on smaller 4 strokes as they typically aren't paired with kickers.

10 8 hour days of trolling puts 80 hours on. I could see somebody putting 160 just trolling hours on in your area pretty easily. Some of those hours are just getting from point A to point B also. That being said, I'd get it checked out, and if things looked good, I would strongly consider it.

The one thing that should be done to this motor before you buy it is what is called a leak down test. That is where a mechanic will pressurize the cylinder with air to see if it leaks away. The valves and seats would be the part on a 90 hp that would concern me.

listen to schmitty I advise you to do a compression test before you even think you purchase any boat then pop the lower unit screw out to see if the fluid is clear then the big jthing is to run the motor if the seller is at any way hesitant back off you need to check before you buy

Mat bought the boat and we used it last weekend at Depere. Motor ran flawlessly and he cannot be happier. It is a very nice set-up.
