At least once a day my unit goes dim and I have to reboot it, brightness says it is at 10 but it is actually barely readable. After reboot, it works fine for hours. A friend says his does the same when in direct sunlight so he thinks it is a heat issue. Lowrance wants it sent in but I hate to give it up for several weeks. Any thoughts?

Try a soft reset, this often clears minor issues.

Mine used to do it on ocasion and some times at night also. It has not happened since I did the 4.0 update.

This happened with me on a less than regular basis.(HDS-8) My 2 cents this may be a voltage battery issue. Also may be a default deal if left on for awhile. seems to happen more after being on for awhile. HDS and all the other fancy sonars are energy pigs. Make sure you head out every time with a fully charged main battery. Don't trust your engine or on board charger junk to charge... get a regular charger and slam a charge in it. I'm working on a dual set up right now if time and rain let me...
My HDS works better after the great Quist sent me update... thank you! check your mail!

I agree sounds like battery voltage issue. mine did this one day and i was able to troubleshoot it to low charged main battery.

Thanks for the info. Battery voltage is good. I updated to 4.0---56 but I see there is a newer update 4.0----.59. I will try that first. It does seem to occur when the unit is on for a while but the reboot fixes the problem and the unit runs again for hours without a hitch.

My HDS10 does the same thing. I have seperate batteries to run my electronic's and it has done it from day one, all the updates have been done also. Now other issues are cropping up like my soft keys, push one of them and you can only read half of what pop's up. time to send it back this fall.
