Well, once again the Illinois Walleye Trail anglers were faced with brutal conditions yesterday at the 2nd points qualifier in Albany, Il. At take-off it seemed as if the teams were going to have a peaceful day on the water, however, it was just the calm before the storm. Sustained winds out of southwest at 30-35 mph and gusts over 40 made boat control near impossible forcing some of the anglers to weigh-in early.

An impressive total of 37 teams set out with high hopes of finding the winning catch. Most of the anglers spoke of a tough bite leading up to the event as well as a difficult time finding the right fish. This section of the river has a slot limit which protects walleyes from 20"-27". Despite the heartbreak of releasing a fish of this size, it seems the slot is doing well for the population and size of the fish in this system. Almost everyone mentioned catching several fish throughout the day in the slot, which is great to hear!
Water clarity was fair with about four inches of visibility and the water temp was right around 50 degrees. There were a total of 68 fish brought to the scales for a total weight of 125.25 pounds.

The winning team of Mica and Steve Killinger found their winning catch on a particular wing dam that has never been a big producer for them in the past until the last few weeks. Mica and Steve spent the majority of their day fishing one wing dam and presented live bait and plastics on 3-ways rigs and pitched jigs and plastics to secure the top spot. The father and son duo weighed 5 walleyes for 18.32 pounds including an over fish that weighed 8.34 pounds. Their 18.32 pound bag earned them $1950.00. Congratulations!!!

Second place was the brother team of Brian and Mark Mazur who weighed in 5 fish for 15.16 pounds including Big Fish of the tournament a 10.28 pound walleye!!!! Brian and Mark also were pitching plastics on leadhead jigs to the face of wing dams. Their second place finish was good for a $1300.00 check as well as $370 for big fish! Congratulations!!!!
