| Here is the latest language the DNR is working with for the proposed changes to the Iowa Code:
"Bait" includes, 1) dead or processed organisms and parts thereof; 2) plant material except those listed as aquatic invasive species; 3) man-made devices and substances designed to attract fish visually or by sense of smell or taste; 4) segmented worms and leeches (i.e., animals in the subclass Oligochaeta); 5) insects; 6) bullfrogs, native crayfish, and frogs except those listed as endangered, threatened, or of special concern; and 7) the following live fish: native sunfishes of the genus Lepomis and their hybrids, native bullheads of the genus Ameiurus, native madtoms of the genus Noturus, and native species in the Cyprinidae (minnows), Catostomidae (suckers), not listed as endangered, threatened, or of special concern.
--. “Commercial Bait” includes, live native sunfish hybrids of the genus Lepomis; green sunfish; orange spotted sunfish; native madtoms of the genus Noturus, and native species in the Cyprinidae (minnows), Catostomidae (suckers), not listed as endangered, threatened, or of special concern, dead gizzard shad; bullfrogs; and native frogs and native crayfish, not listed as endangered, threatened, or of special concern.
481A.72 HOOKS.
A person shall not at any time take from the waters of the state any fish, except as otherwise provided in this chapter, except with hook, line, and bait, nor shall a person use more than two lines nor more than two hooks on each line in hook and line fishing. A third line with no more than two hooks may be used when possessing a valid third line permit. Hook and line fishing means still fishing, trolling, fly fishing, jug fishing, drifting or casting.. A person shall not leave fish line or lines and hooks in the water unattended by being out of visual sight of the lines and hooks. One hook means a single, double, or treble pointed hook, and all hooks attached as a part of an artificial bait, worm harness or lure shall be counted as one hook and is used with intent of catching not more than one fish in a single event.
