Location: Essexville, MI./Saginaw Bay. | It's 53 degrees here right now on the Saginaw Bay, with surface water temps still in the mid 40's. Buddies of mine got some more really nice walleyes trolling yesterday in some moderate winds and chop. I'm heading out tomorrow. Suppose to reach the mid 50's until Wednesday. We didn't even have any safe ice form last winter on the Bay, nor did Lake Erie if I remember correctly. I really don't believe in Global Warming but do believe in Global trends. Our water depths are also at Historic lows on all the Great Lakes. We are officially below our lowest water datum recorded and since the ultra low waters levels of 1967 on Lake Huron.
Believe it or not, having thick ice is as much the key and contributes to having higher water levels as much as having a heavy snow pack does. Besides slowing the evaportaion process during the winter months, ice jams in the spring jam up both the St.Claire and Detroit rivers, holding back this massive amount of surging water and contribute as greatly to all the Great Lakes sustained water levels as the snow pack run-off does during the spring and early summer seasons. This phenomina did not happen at all last year and if it don't happen this year, along with the economy keeping many marinas and public launches from re-vamping their launches, it could be very, very bad for the whole industry.
