Subject: Brown Trout

Checked out the Maitowoc Marina this Sunday morning, finding some decent trout action.

The young man in the picture linked below had bragging rights over his Dad, and another friend, by catching the nice 25 inch Brown Trout he is holding. The other fish were smaller eat'in sized Rainbows.

All fish were caught on tip-ups using golden shiners for bait, within 2 hours of the time recorded on the picture.

Very sweet Rick.

I put Browns in the category of very special fish. Their stunning beauty and markings are without a doubt unmatched in the fish world. And as you probably guessed, I have a few pictures of some nice browns myself.

But the stream browns seem to achive the most vibrant colors. These of course are smaller versions most often than their BIG lake cousins. But we caught a monster stream brown one fall day a few years ago pulling plugs for Kings. This baby was 31 inches long and almost 12 pounds. Have a look.

Rick.

Ya, stream browns like kings spawn in the fall. So part of their armour for fighting off other males and looking kool for the ladies is that hoooked gaw/kype that hinges right into a groove/slot on the upper gaw. This gal had this brown mounted and what a beautiful trophy it turned out to be for her.

Say Rick,

Years ago I would drive over from the Twin Cities and fish the hot water discharge from the power plant up from Two Rivers for Browns in the spring. Do they still let people launch there at the plant and fish the discharge? We would catch some real beauties there, and good numbers also. More than once my friend and I would fill out in only a couple hours. When the wind was pushing the current the right way, lakers would come in along the drop off out a little further from shore, and we would have some real fun with the light tackle. 8-12lb. lakers on a 9' medium light rod with 4-6lb test mono is ALOT OF FUN!!!

P.S. You've got mail

Hi Jack,

As I sit here typing this, I am looking over the area you speak of. I work at Point Beach Nuclear and have that info.

No launching is allowed at the plant. The launch you speak of here at the plant is now way out of the water, as we are in a low water period. No fishing is allowed within 500 yards of the plant, as the Coast Guard has placed buoys around the disharge due to the elevated terrorists threats created from 9/11.

There are plenty of alternatives along Lake Michigan though. In the Milwaukee area, off Oak Creek, there is a warm water discharge where they get big browns and coasters (lake run brookies). In Port Washington, Manitowoc, and Sheboygan, there are warm water discharges from the coal plants. Fishing is good, as the forage base is non-existent, and there are alot of browns and coasters drawn to these areas. The hardest part might be finding an open boat launch. If you decide to go, let me know and I can get some updated info for you.

I never fished Browns around there, but have a couple times in the spring during the run, fished steelies in the streams north of there. That was always a blast. Caught my first steelie up there back in the early 70's and just as I went to net the thing I realized I had a bear standing about 5 feet away from me, at eye level, with a hungry look on his face and starring at MY fish. That was the first and only time I've walked on water! I actually think I made it across that stream before I got that net out of the water.

Howdy,

From my experience, you can effectively fish Browns and rainbows with a few lakers mixed in, right from the platform and the seawalls along the Port Washington power plant.

All an angler really needs is a net with a looong handle and some appropriate equipment.

I love using my 10 and 12 foot noodle rods and 4/2 fireline on these fish, whatta fight! The long rods lessen the change of pulling the hook out of a hard fighting fish's mouth and the extra line capacity means you will not often be "spooled" by a long running fish.

But be sure to bring some bait as it is difficult to find during the wee hours of the morning. Salmon spawn, the fresh frozen kind always works better than the jarred stuff, and be sure to consider some lake or emerald shiners. Though, we have had some luck with rosy reds and dead smelt as spring nears.

I have also spent considerable time at Oak Creek and you are somewhat limited by ice as the launch at Grant Park is in a shallow slow running creek and South Shore can be ice locked too. But the fishing can more than make up for it.

We used to drag a 16 foot deep v tin boat off the trailer and push it down the ice to open water. Wear good waders and be ready to jump in the boat quick!

Waves are also a huge consideration in the cold water season, especially in smaller boats. BE SAFE!

The tip up for trout action looks really fun! I am thinking about trying that during the holidays, anywhere in particular it is hot? Is the area mentioned hit hard, or will I be able to get a spot on the ice?

Think there is always enough room, but my opinion is; there is less fisherman on weekdays, and this is the best. In my younger years, spent alot of time fishing for these trout and know they are very spooky in that shallow water, and if there is alot of people, there is less action.

Steve, next time you drive throught the area, give me a heads up and I'll take you fishing there. And anyone else for that matter!

If your store slows down, they might let you go fishing, if you ask.
