Gentlemen,

I'd like to catch a walleye through the ice on the Saginaw Bay here in MI. I've tried it a couple of times with no success, but really have no idea what I'm doing and I've never fished for Walleye before. I only have basic equipment and a few suggested lures in my box (Swedish pimple, Loco metallic perch, and a Leadhead). I've heard you need deep water (12' plus) versus the 2-4' we fish perch in, and they hit better at dawn and dusk. The jigging also seems to be different. I've been told to pull the rod up a couple of feet and let the lure float slowly down to get some action and draw attention. I've also been told to use just the head-end half of a walleye minnow. The biggest question I have is: "how often should you "jig"? Contantaly? Twice per five minutes? Once every 10 minutes? etc. Any and all tips you guys have for a "true rookie" would be welcome. Sorry for sounding like an idiot.....I'm just trying to learn.

- Bill

Hi Bill, Don't feel bad, we all have had our own learning experience for Ice walleyes. My suggestion is invest a little money and contact Dan Manyen aka walleye express, on this board, and spend a day with him. He'll teach you the techniques involved and you'll have a great day. Have fun!

Thanks for the kudos Gary.

And without blowing my own horn to loud Bill, I'm afraid Gary is right. Like every other type, kind and technique of fishing, the learning curve is cut substancially when you go out with somebody who's been doing it for years and observe and learn form them what works. And writing about what to do is fine, but doesn't hold the same lessons as hands on. My web address in at the bottom of this post. Go to my site, look around, check out the photo gallery and my guest book comments from previous clients. If you like what you see, give me a call. The ice is forming as we speak and the ice fishing window on the Bay is narrow.

Thanks for the tips to hire a charter, but I'm more of a figure it out for myself kind of guy (plus it ain't real cheap). I did follow the link to Walleye Express' website and found a link there to a great article at www.saginawbay.com. I'm slowly gathering good equipment, so it's just a matter of time and technique before I start pulling a few up on my own (I hope). An old neighbor of mine pulled nearly 30 through the ice last year, so I think it's about time I stop by and talk him into taking me out. Even so, I'd like to avoid coming across as a complete idiot, so if you guys have any basic tips on techniques, I'd sure like to hear them.

Frozen.

I'm guessing you read my article on ice fishing (techniques new and old) I have posted on Saginawbay.com. I believe theres one more on there worth the reading titled late season ice eyes or something like that I wrote as well. But if you have a specific question about the bay and the techniques write her down and post her. I'll answer it the best I know how without writing another article here.
