Check out the thread on "New to mapping sounders...."

My observation is that most tournament fishermen run Lowrance. I currently have the X15(2) and a GlobalMap 3000. I love the units but will be upgrading to color unit on next boat. I'd guess that in two years, all you will see is color.

I have used lowrance and garmin. I think the Garmin is easier to use, but they do not have the pixel count and screen size of the bigger Lowrance units. IF you can "get by" with 320 vertical, you can buy either companies units in color. I like them both. It has become such a candy store this year. Combo units without color, 480x480, at $500.00 WOW. It was only a couple of years ago these would be $1600.00. The trend to color has made the "basic" units a better buy than ever.
Take care,
Jim O

Jim- What's the advantage of color? Would the mapping part be easier to read?

Yes, mapping is easier to read plus the resolution with a color unit is better. I have two Lowrance X-19's and they are awesome units. Great separation and resolution. My only complaint with them would be that these, just like any other LCD unit, freeze up when it's very cold. Had this happen at LBDN this fall.
