Gary.

A friend of mine and myself were going to sign up for the RCL leauge Detroit River tourney this spring, but he said now they are going to pick tourney partmenrs by draw versus team sign up's. Is this right and do you know why they changed it?

That is correct, Dan. The idea is for a boater or co-angler to sign up together to guarantee each other's entry. This does not mean you will be partners. The partner format is a blind draw. You get whoever you get.

Bummer Jerry.

I was going to do it with Big Brian (perchjerker) to learn something about fishing the Detroit and a few of the better spots. I do a lot of pencil plug whippin on the St. Claire in the Spring and I'm a pretty good stick when it comes to virtical jigghing. But just don't know the lay of the land on the Detroit, and would feel like I shorted somebody if they got me as a partner, with nothing more than fishing savvy to offer.

Dan, I don't fish these large circuits anymore, but can tell you that every single pro out there prays to the fishing gods every day of a tournament that their co-angler knows how to fish. They don't expect you to offer anything in the way of information about the waters you are fishing, but just that you know which end of the rod to hold, and hopefully you will know when you have a bite!

Be prepared though, some of those pro's could learn alot from you!

WE,

Sign up anyway with PJ! You should at least some boat time with him prefishing. Then when the tourney rolls around, you may get a great boater in the draw, and learn even more about the river. Don't worry about the boater who gets you as a pard. There are alot of co-anglers signing up for the league events that don't know anything about fishing, or the water, or the different techniques, and that is why they are there. The premise for the boater/co-angler format is for the co-angler to learn. As a boater, I would be thrilled to draw a co with your knowledge and abilities!

And PJ should get in these as a boater, just because! He's a great guy. I don't know all three of the waters for MI division, but I do know that you could be a boater at one, and a co at the others. Perhaps you could sign up with PJ for Detroit, and he could be the co on Saginaw Bay with you as the boater, for instance. Prefish together, and hope you get decent draws.

Thanks for the insight Shep and Jack.

This was only going to be a one time deal on the Detroit. Hoping maybe to add that facit to my charter program, like I did the St.Claire night fishing with pencil plugs. And with Brian as a partner, I could really have fun, pick his brain and not be totally intent on winning, as we both agreed to when we hatched the idea. My own charter schedules also kinda kick in around the times they have the RCL tourneys. And I always get to cash a check on charters versus tourneys.
