Member Posts: 874 Location: Neenah, WI | Saw a deer hunting segment on WBAY channel 2 news from Green Bay. A guy was showing off the deer he shot and said his son texted him that there were deer coming his way and that's why he got it. Ummmmmm, I think that's against the law here in WI. That's how Winkelman got pinched too, Minnesota I think. Wouldn't surprise me if this guy hears from the DNR.

Member Posts: 113 | Here in Illinois we used the motarola radios. Was stopped by DNR and he said they are not illegal as long as your not using them to let everybody know the DNR is checking people out. He asked why do we have radios, told him to tell my buddies if a deer is coming their way. Said OK that's fine. I do not know if they are illegal in Wisc. or Minn.

I always understood the princable behind, but never understood what precise law was being broken with the (Police are Nearby) announcment on CB's or Cell phones. Unless you are/were directly informing a law breaker to watch out. Edited by walleye express 11/25/2013 10:09 AM

Member Posts: 113 | No electronic calling devices not communication devices. Using the radios for warning pochers is correct.

Member Posts: 1314 Location: Menasha, WI | Looking through the regs again, I'm not sure that texting to alert another hunter that a deer is on the way is illegal. It appears to me that it would be illegal to request someone to come tag a deer you shot with their tag, but not to tell them a deer is on the way in their direction: Hunters may not use cellular phones, special free radio communications, or other mechanical or electronic amplifying devices (except hearing aids) to get someone to tag a deer. It is legal to use electronic devices for reasons other than getting someone to tag a deer (pp. 27 & 30).
