Member Posts: 2567 Location: Manitowoc, WI | This response could be many different things to everyone. In terms of just enjoying the day, I got out last summer one day with both my kids and wife. We just boated....trolled a bit, hung around, had some lunch, soaked some cranks and crawlers and only caught one white bass for the day. But, it was a great day nonetheless. As for numbers, my son and I went out the day before the website tourney three years ago and made one pass on my favorite mud numbers. We had 17 fish in that 1.5 hr pass. They ranged from 15-25". The bite was incredible that weekend too, as Shadman and I had our first legitimate 6-header....all six boards gong back at the same time. When the lines were unscrambled, we had 5 walleyes and 1 sheepie. For the day, I'd estimate we caught at least 30 walleyes....maybe even more. Just wondering if the spawn of 2001 fish will be big enough this year to have another couple of days like that.

| The answer goes back a few years to 1994. It was a late spring day and the big girls were stacked up on the ledge of a small rock reef. My fishing mate and I limited out very quickly, fast trolling the green and orange Rapala magnums 35 feet behind the boards. The smallest fish was a 21 inch sauger and not only is this a big suager, but during that year the whole basket would have popped most guys eyes out of their heads! What was really interesting about the day, we met a thin, well-dressed older gentleman at the landing who asked about the fishing. When I told him he was very skeptical and demanded to see these fish. He just couldn't believe we had caught those fish in the system and as he paced back and forth acrossed the length of my new MirrorCraft he shouted, and I quote, "You Could Have Won The Mercury Marine Tournament With This Single Day's Catch"! Yes the tournament was being held that saturday and look at the trouble this guy has caused me in thinking about entering tournaments! And by the way....have never found those girls in that locale again. | |||

Member Posts: 377 Location: Neenah Wi | Thats really a hard one to answer.I would say everyday on winnebago is a good day.The worst days are the ones doing work around the house wishin you were fishin.I ve had some days with 12 decent fish when I was by myself in less than 4hrs and a couple of days with over 30 fish but lots of small fish 11-12".Sure is fun when you can't keep 6 boards in the water.

Member Posts: 3899 | I've had 2 days on Bago I would consider great. The first was in 92 with my wife. It was June and I didn't know squat about fishing there. We started long line trolling Shad Raps on Long Point. We caught fish after fish, and had a blast. I think we caught close to 50 eyes that morning. All seemd to be exactly 14 1/2", and had to go back. We ended up with 5 or 6 keepers, the biggest being 17". But it was fun, and we still talk about it today. Probably the best fishing day was July 20th, 02. I took my nephew out, and we trolled harnesses inside of the big group straight out from Oshkosh. We were all by ourselves, and we caught our first fish around 7:30. 16'er in the well. The next fish came around 8:10, and then 8:40. The all heck broke loose. We couldn't keep our boards in the water. Between 9:00 and 10:30, we caught 17 eyes, the biggest was 26 1/2. We kept 9 fish for the day, all under 18". But to release 11 fish, with 5 over 22" was a great feeling. Oh, and we didn't realize it, but when we had to pickup to leave, we weren't alone anymore! About 50 of the several hundred out there that day were right there with us, and having good luck to! We were so busy, we didn't even notice, as all played real nice!

Member Posts: 215 | They are all good days but I'd have to say it was two years ago in late June and I was on a good school of Nice walleyes. Running short on time before night fall and a big storm system coming from the west, we set sail for the spot in the mud off Stockbridge. Now it normally gets dark around 9-930ish but this day it got dark much sooner. We had been out a half an hour and boated 7 fish in just as much time. Nothing under 19" biggest being 25. And then there was one of those thick bright bolts that came out of a coal black sky and hit somewhere around the Neenah area. We were smart and pulled as soon as we saw it. Others waited for the second bolt to hit which turned out to be a foolish mistake. Getting to the landing and out of the water we turned to see the mad dash to the landing as the wall of rain and lightning was chasing the later fishermen off the water. just as they got to shore..it hit with big wind, rain and thunder. High and dry were we that night as we were in the truck. One of the very few times I have listened to my father's advice. No fish is worth your life. But the half an hour before it hit.....what a blast!

Member Posts: 874 Location: Neenah, WI | A couple of years ago I had to fill in for my wife in the Pops tournament. Ginny was required to work that Sat. and we couldn't find a replacement for her. I'm the tourney director and didn't really feel good about fishing but didn't have much choice. After I got the other boats sent out, Steve Eisch and I launced my boat and headed out. We started trolling DJ's by Garlic and in 1/2 hour we had 3 fish that weighed about 14 lbs. It was unbelievable!! On the way out the ratchet strap for my kicker had broken which would make running back to our spot a hassle. We decided to just keep going. We really never kept count of how many fish we caught. We just kept trolling northeast until it was time to go in, catching fish after fish. We returned early so that I could check all the other boats in. We probably caught 20-25 eyes and only a couple of sheeps and whitebass. The scale we had at the bar would only weigh 18lbs. at a time. When we weighed ours it pegged the scale and was way more than enough to win. We also had the big fish for the day, it was over 6 lbs. Not wanting to rub it in, we never did separate those fish and get an accurate weight. I would guess that those 5 weighed about 23 lbs. Sometimes there's no rhyme or reason for the way things happen. Everything just fell into place that day. It was a great day on the water for 2 friends to just relax and catch fish. I'll never forget it.

Member Posts: 41 | I could never narrow down a single best day, because there have been a lifetime of them. The only time this lake has not been literally on fire was about 1985 - 1990. In that that 5 year span the eyes crashed the baitfish and didn't pull off any decent spawns. The sandpike also went down the tubes at this time. I'm glad things turned around in a big way. A few "best days on the lake" come to mind. 1972 May trolling with my grandfather on a favorite rock hump brought many a limit with hand lines & cane poles.....one day in particular whitecaps, SE wind 15-25, 2 passes we had a Peoples beer case pretty well full. 1994 I found some perch in the mud.....no one else around. Not just any perch. All 10,11,12 inchers. As fast as you could get a line down.......2000 on a rock when everyone else were river rats. SE wind 10-20. Planned to slip bob afterwork. By myself. Ancored up shallow, set out the first line.....bobber down. Never got another line in. 2002 had my 4 year old out on opening day Wally weekend. We were pulling boards. Had a few fish to go when a board went back hard. My boy wound in a 29.5 incher. We were among other tourney boats and they saw the whole thing. They coulda used a bib. I mounted that fish for my son and it marked his time in becoming true fisherman. Many more "best days" to come.

Member Posts: 2300 Location: Berlin | I would have to narrow it down to two different days. The first was back aroud 95 and I was slip bobbering the canes close to dark. I had 6 fish and all were over 23". The next (and probably the better of the two) was 2 days before the PWT on Bago in 2002. I had a spot I had been fishing for almost two weeks. Every day I caught a limit and had atleast 2 over 24". On this particular day I had 2 26", 1 25", and 3 all around 24". The best part is that I have had great luck in that spot since then and I am sure it will make me alot of money throughout my life. The other thing that made it special is they were all caught jigging. The only bad part was that I was hungry for fish and I never was able to bring a fish home for 2 weeks because they were all too big.

Member Posts: 84 Location: Hartford, WI | One that come to mind is. Last year July 4th right after the am storms rolled through. I took my wife out for a few hours. Well It started to get a bit windy , she got a little nervous, So I decided to pull it. After Pulling the first Line a fish Hit`s a Storm Deep jr. I gave her the Rod as I cleared the other Lines. She still had not made any Progress on this fish ( thinking it was a sheeps hooked sideways). I offer to help, she said no dice. Well after about a 15 minute battle We find out it`s a big Eye. Here I`m sitting with no net ( left it at home ). A belly grab, and into the boat she came. All 28 and a half inches worth. Told her she knew the rule , grab the camera , cause we got to get her back in the water. She said no way,I`m puttin that one on the wall. So as we speak it`s at Second Nature Taxidermy in Green Bay. There are lots more, but I`ve been long enough. Good Luck Fishing Edited by GWH 2/15/2004 9:03 AM

Member Posts: 1406 | GWH, That too was one of my best weekends on the lake. We managed 20 nice fish just north of the first wave of storms and didn't want to quit as the second batch began to come across from the north we went south, out from Oshkosh and set up again. caught another 5 fish and the storm again came from the west, this time covering the entire north end of the lake. We headed for the mouth and got soaked, I knew if we tried to get back to Stockbridge we would be fightin BIG waves. The wind was one of the worst! We made it to Garlic island as it began clearing to the north and headed back to the first spot! Not a boat around and the fish kept poppin! There are just too many Great days to remember them all! Good Luck Tyee
