Encouraged by the good news by the fellow anglers about a good predator(and not only) bite I decided to close the open water (The ban for fishing just kicked in in Bulgaria) on that same body of water. It is not a really close call for me, but it was all well worth it! This is the place to mention that we go fishing in a boat with a family from Plovdiv - 4 guys + every necessary thing and a bunch of luxury pleasures onboard. The latter we keep in two coolers one for the fluids and another for the solids. So Friday night we packed and early (0700) Saturday morning we took off from Plovdiv. Even the women agreed ![]() After about 3hrs we were at the mouth of the Reservoir, where there was already a boaters convention crowded with vehicles and people.:( Took us 20mins to launch and now the dilemma was where to head for? The scene at the boat launch wasn't encouraging at all - the 30 or so boats were circling ar holding right there in the cove. Everyone was acting in their own ways - slow trolling or full throttle dashes from spot to spot with no lures in tow. Seeing no one was getting any action we unanimously decided to "run away" from the crowds as the fish seemed to be finicky and did not seem to bite. Now, about the equipment: We trol with 4 rods, set up in rod holders (so we do not occupy our hands with anything). We do not praise top-notch expensive brands and only invest in the necessary and effective affordable tackle. Line diameter is 0.40mm, not so much because of the fish, but more so in order to save snags in the bottom or fishing nets (it is a common practice of local reservoir owners to commersially fish in the same areas that are designated to angling :() well this line is strong enough to move the boat in the case of a hook-up. The Lures: Rapalas and other trolling baits. All loaded, we took off at no wake towards the inner portions of the man-made lake, set up the rods and opened the coolers, but could not pay them the proper attention, because scenery was as follows: ![]() Or, even better: ![]() About 1330 the strike came! I was carried away gazing at the sights as I was the "captain behind the wheel", when Betty (the sister-in-law) said: "Isn't this Rod bent down too low?" What followed was lightning-fast killing of the motor and routine actions - fast reeling in of the other 3 lines and I had the honor to fight the fish, as it hit on my side ;). Will not try to explain how I did it, cause whatever words I use will not suffice, neither will they depict it properly. All thet comes to mind is: "GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO MIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIITCH!!!" LOLOL LMAO :);):) That sais it all. After I-don't-know-how-long the fish was secured in my hands: ![]() And so we went on in a most common fashion. Not long after that we made a full U-turn as we needed to make it back on time (even a full day is not enough to cover the whole reservoir). On our way out we decided to pass a "winners lap" to check on how the crowds were doing. Another Zander hit followed, which encouraged us to circle that drift once more, when we had another hit and it was another Zander. These 2 fish were not cutting it for us, besides they were barely legal, so we decided not to waste any more young ones (specialists say, that once caught a Zander dies even after a swift release). During our last drifts we noticed the other boats had 5-6 fish of similar size in the 40 mins we spent, they were getting hits both trolling and vertically jigging equally effective. Back on shore we had to memorise the occasion: ![]() ![]() The fish was 25.5" and 8lbs (guessweight) The camp of a few fellow overnight shore fishermen: ![]() The night was all Zander and this sort of stuff ;): ![]() Well that is gonna keep me warm and waiting for the opener. Godspeed to everyone and may you catch at least as big of a fish." | ||
