Member Posts: 2567 Location: Manitowoc, WI | I thought I would start a new topic, since the old one was beaten to death. I would regard this as the law when it comes to the PWT tourney and their application of the rules: PWT Contestants This is an update for those fishing Winneconne. The Wolf River, from its mouth at Lake Poygan upstream is considered NO-TROLLING. The wardens enforce this, and have declared that hand-lining or trolling with spinners and bouncers or trolling cranks is not allowed and will be cause for tickets. Since the wardens patrol this area heavily in Spring, this is an advance warning. Other waters in the boundaries, including Lakes Poygan, Winneconne, Buttes des Morts and Winnebago allow trolling. Also, at Winneconne, PWT contestants MUST obey the no-wake rule on the Wolf River from the railroad bridge at Gills Landing to the upstream boundaries. This no-wake policy (5 mph maximum speed) begins Friday, April 16, and runs through Friday April 23. Since other boats may be on the river during your practice period, give them plenty of room and slow down. Each pro is responsible for the image of the PWT (and all other pro anglers).

| Please also remember that NO WAKE means , "The slowest possible speed at which you can still retain steerage", If going 5 mph throws a wake, you are not within the rules as enforced on the river. No WAKE means NO WAKE, not whatever happens at 5mph. Just a tip to provide clairity. | |||

| So.....Live bait on a jig (not vertical) will not be a problem.......as I expected. | |||

Member Posts: 9 Location: Kiel, WI | If not mistaken the coast gaurd and DNR state that a boat wake consists of your boat moving through the water at a speed so as not to create a cresting wave meaning when going slow watch the wave behind you and when it crests you are going to fast. A cresting wave does not mean white water just the top of the wave breaking over which is usually about 4 mph for a walleye boat. If you watch a sail boat motoring they can go much faster than a walleye boat without creating a wake.

Member Posts: 3899 | Anybody notice at the Spring Hearings on Mondy, Question #21? Hmmmm. My take is that, right now, through a technicality, it is legal on the Wolf, from Poygan on up. Here is the question. QUESTION 21 - Wolf River Motor Trolling – Prohibit motor trolling on the Wolf River, Winnebago, Outagamie, Waupaca, and Shawano counties. In order to provide consistent management on the waters collectively known as the Winnebago System, a definition was written into rule for the Winnebago System waters, which includes the Wolf River. Along with providing consistency, the new definition simplified rule writing by providing a single location in administrative code for all regulations on the system. On the large lakes of the Winnebago System, motor trolling is allowed and quite popular, so upon creation of the Winnebago System definition, motor trolling was allowed. However, historically motor trolling was prohibited on the Wolf River. With creation of the new definition, motor trolling was mistakenly permitted. Anglers, law enforcement and the fishing regulations pamphlet have always assumed that trolling was still prohibited on the Wolf River. There are no documented negative biological impacts on fish populations due to motor trolling. However, due to the congestion on the Wolf River, law enforcement staff are concerned about safety and user conflicts that may arise due to motor trolling and feel that it should not be allowed.
