 Member Posts: 2680 Location: Essexville, MI./Saginaw Bay. | Being a charter Captain, I've made the weather and it's moods a close study of mine. All I really need is a reliable look at what front is where, where it's headed and how fast, to get a decent idea of the forecast. I canceled a night trip on the Bay a couple days ago because of the wind being in the wrong direction. Virtually any wind 10 MPH or above NE N or NW on Saginaw Bay spells chop in the 2 to 3 feet range. Not life threatening by any means, but compound it with being pitch dark, and I'd rather error on the side of good sense. So today I watch as the wind stayed pretty much out of the NE, even though they predicted it at E all day. About 3:00pm I noticed the wind verctors were about to change for a 4 to 5 hour period and blow off-shore/West before they swung around North with the leading edge of a front coming in. On a fluke I called the guys in Lansing that I canceled two days ago and asked if they could be up here by 6:00pm this afternoon. They dropped everything and met me at 6:15pm. When we hit the Bay there were waves coming from two different directions. One set from the NE blow all day and the others overlapping because of the building West winds. I told the guys once the waves all started going in the same directions we'd hit some fish in front of the aproaching cold front. Right at sunset the West wind finally blew the tops off the NE swells and the fish started to hit. We went 8 for 9 in about 2 hours. Then in a flash around 9:45pm you could suddenly see your brethe, the wind switch to the North and we headed for the barn. We were all pretty chilled when we got back. It took all I could do to talk the guys into reaching into the ice cooler and holding up two each of our catch. I love it when a plan comes together. Heres the picture thats becoming even more precious to me latley than the fish. If you look closely, you can actually see the leading edge of the cold front blocking half of the setting sun last night. By 9:45pm the wind shifted North and she hit us.
