I normaly don't buy expensive reels as when the old ones start sounding rough they get junked and gives me a reason to get a new one!!! Do any of you guys take your reels apart to grease and oil them. I have oiled them in the past but thinking about putting a little bit of Mobil 1 synthetic grease in them. I have one that is driving me nuts but I like it to much to junk it!! Any suggestions would be great. Or I might just have to go shopping!!!

Every spring I take the side cover off, spray them out with some gas or wd40, blow them out with the air compressor with light pressure to get the wd40 out, and then re-lube them with a light oil like 3 in 1 oil. They'll last you a lot longer with a little maintenance each spring. With Shimano reels this is a necessity, especially if the ever get dunked or sit in heavy rain.

One more tip, if you've got a cheap real that you really like but it feels rough even after cleaning it, there's a way to smoothen it up a bit.

Take the crank handle off, take the side cover off, pull the main gear out and smear a very small amount of baking soda toothpaste on it. Just enough to lightly coat it. Then put it back together, and crank on it for a few minutes. The abrasive baking soda will polish the gear a little making it reel smoother and less likely to bind. Clean it out with wd 40 or gas and re-lube. I've done that with several of those $9 quantum reels that target sells and they turned out pretty nice.

I clean my reels at least once a year. I wipe the old grease out and put some new Abu Garcia Silicote grease in. A few drops of oil on any bearings too.

Polishing compound really does a nice job smoothing out gearing also. Make sure you clean out the compound well, and lube with a high quality light grease and oil.

Full service of my reels are done as needed some time 2-3 times a year.
Bank fishing gets sand in them.
I go a little farther than you guys have stated.

All parts are dis-assebled cleaned lubed and put back together.

All bearing and shafts get oiled.

Gears get silicone grease.

Drag washers get light silicone grease.
The felts will dry out and get gummed up.

Light grease in the bail trip chamber.

And light grease in side of the line guide roller.

Back in sevice till it needs to be done again.

Oh yea a drop of oil were the rotating point of the handle is helps alot.

This is for spinning reels, but my bait casters are done pretty much the same way.

This is how I serviced them back when I worked at a bait shop for the coustomers, and still how I do them.

They work like new again....unless some thing major is wrong with them like a bent shaft.

What do you use to clean the old grease out of the reel?

Good Paper towel then, Q-tips.
To wipe it out of the reel case.
For the small messy parts, gears and shafts.
Most degreasing is done out of the reel to the parts.
With brake cleaner.
Do not soak any plastic or nylon parts in the cleaner,
Just dry wipe them off as the solvent will eat some types of plastics.
Note where each screw came from and which one was the longer one.
Do not loose the screws, thats the hardest part.
