Member Posts: 1314 Location: Menasha, WI | Okay, 'Bago veterans here's my question: If one finds sheephead, does that indicate that eyes are nearby too? The reason I ask is becasue I took my two young boys to a spot down the street where we fish because it is convenient but is usually not at all productive. However, the other day we caught numerous sheephead and I was thinking that maybe if I just put in some more time I might find a walleye or two. Any opinions?

Member Posts: 1656 | My 2 cents, regarding sheephead on 'bago. It seems to me when fishing structure, typically reefs, if there are sheephead around there are usually walleyes around. I don't base it on sheephead being there, but that there are active fish in the area. So if I bounce from reef to reef and finally get a couple sheephead, I'll tend to give it a couple minutes longer, holding out for a walleye. Especially when using live bait. Now when it comes to the mud and trolling, it seems to me there are sheephead everywhere....:)

Member Posts: 744 | where you catch walleyes, you will most likely catch sheephead, but the reverse is most definitely NOT true!!

Fish will hang in groups by size and not always by what type of fish they are. Ofcourse there are time when i caught only walleyes or just sheephead so i dont think there is one answer. But" two more years and i will think just like a walleye" then i should be able to give yeah a exact answer

Member Posts: 526 Location: blue mounds, wisc | my thinking on this is that the walleye are above the sheep and below the white bass, therefore when trolling the mud if your catching sheep your to deep and if its wipeass then your to high. but in waters like the mississippi the adult sheep are usually around the bigger walleye.

Member Posts: 299 Location: Wind lake, Wi | Heres my thoughts. When I am trolling in the mud and I find out what depth the sheephead or the whities are hanging at I will drop my rigs down about 1-2 foot. I believe that walleye will wait for easy meals. Lets say the sheephead are feeding at 6-7 fow in 18' the walleyes always seem to be below them to pick off dying baitfish that are floating to the bottom. I think they do this to conserve enery. I have however found walleyes in the mud just 1-2 foot below the surface and sometimes it seems like whitebass are below them. Like they say, once you think you have them figured out- think again.
