Do you think using a clasp vs. tying on a jig or other slower moving lure can decrease you chances of geting a walleye to bite overall?

Well using a clip where I fish jigs would be nuts.
I go to the river expecting to go threw 50-100 jigs in a day.
So using a clip in this sit. would be a waste.

The way I see it is if you had it on a clip or something it would flop around on you. If you tie it on you can use the knot to keep the jig in the position you want.

the use of a snap on a jig i do when useing it on three-ways. it keeps the jig hook up and helps it from snagging . other wise like the veteran pro angler dale said , your line will keep your jig in position where you want it.

Terror.

I'm a Straight-tie man in most instances. The fewer points to have a failure in the link to the lure or jig the better. I've had to many of even the good clips fail.

Add to the failure potential the fact that a snap reduces sensitivity.

I use a snap if I'm pitching or casting jigs. Tie on for vertical situations.

My brother is one of the best fishermen I know.  He's not an 'eye guy, but he targets some smart fish.  He's on the water at least 150 days a year, although he doesn't fish for a living.  Fishing with him and using his tactics when I'm not, I can't tell you how many times we were putting one fish into the boat after another with a dozen boats around us not catching a thing, watching us and wondering what the heck we're doing.  I'm not exagerating.

Here are a couple of his rules:

  • Fluorocarbon leader in the lightest test possible, whenever possible
  • No snaps, if you want the lure to have more action, such as for topwater, use a loop knot
  • Cut off the tag end of your knot as close to the knot as possible

Fish in general already have enough in their favor, why give them any help?

My Dad came out to Montana a few years ago on a visit from the "old country" (Northern Minnesota) and I noticed he had a couple of rods with jigs on snap swivels. I asked him if he was getting lazy in his old age..or what. He said... no, he'd been using the snaps on the jigs in the weedlines on Winnibigoshish and it worked really good.

We were at Ft. Peck, Montana this day and he left the snaps on the jigs. I tied mine on ( being more "professional" and all).

We were nowhere near weeds and he kicked my butt. He had several big ones......eyes up to 12.44 #.
I can see how they would help on a jig being snapped through weeds. But he kicked my butt that day.

Do I now use snaps on jigs?
No...unless I am snapping the jig through weeds.

I use a small duo-lock snap and a swivel with the small jigs when pitching them. That keeps my line from twisting using crawlers or minnows. I have never noticed any problems getting the fish to hit.

"He's not an 'eye guy, but he targets some smart fish."

And who are you kidding? hahaha Sorry! I couldn't let that one slide.

As for the topic...I always tie directly to the jig. I don't see an advantage to using a snap. Except for Ice fishing, then I use fast snaps, for changing jigs quickly.

I have been jigging since i was old enough to hold a rod and reel, and i have never used snaps on jigs at any time. I just turned 63 on May 26th...ya ya, i know i am an ol' fart...LOL

for me, tying directly to the jig eye is the only way to go.
