After deciding to take a stab at hand lining we decided the only one to teach up the technique would be Hutch. My dad and I scheduled a day on the water with the master himself for Hand Lining 101. Greeted by chocolate colored 3 foot high waters the outlook on catching fish was gloomy. Hutch decided to try a little 3-waying (not like your thinking his legs are too hairy) to get us warmed up for our hand line course. Although I wasn't very optomistic on catching any fish due to water conditions I figured if anyone could catch them, Hutch could, and boy was I right! We put in above Desoto and Hutch decided to try a spot that he thought would produce some action. Since Hutch has fished all kinds of water and weather I trusted his knowledge as did my dad. With only two boats in the vicinity and perfect weather we dropped our rods in the water and let the lessons begin! After about 100 yards Hutch says "there he is" and hoisted in a nice 17 inch walleye, on the next pass my dad got in the action. After two passes and 4 walleye caught (3 by dad) and 1 by Hutch I was beginning to think Hutch sabbotaged my lures. Hutch said with a grin "are you getting in on the action, or just our for a boat ride", of course he followed with "here put this on" ;-). On the next pass I caught 4 walleye. With a hint of sarcasm Hutch says; "and they say color doesn't mean anything".
By 10:30 a.m. we had boated 13 legal and 4 short fish, of course the Master had to pull one in that was over 7#'s. Hutch finally decided that we were ready for Hand Lining 101.

After showing us the basics and getting us set up we tried an area with a nice sandy bottom to let us get a feel of what it felt like then he thought we were ready to try our hands at one of his "HOT" spots. Again we dropped our lines in and after explaining what we should feel for on the first pass my dad brought in two nice fish so Hutch had helped him lose his hand lining virginity. Hutch got that grin again and repeated the boat ride phrase. My turn for some fun - I boated 3 on the next pass.

All said and done we ended up with 37 fish (29 walleye, 8 sauger - all but 7 keepers) for some extra fun we fished for some stripers and ended up with about 20 stripers, 2 sheephead and a gar. The course was everything you could want and more and we will do it again, for those of you who love to fish and enjoy learning new techniques and lessons there is no better teacher than Hutch - we not only gained knowledge we gained a life long friendship that goes above catching fish. Hutch - thanks buddy for a great day, spending a great day with my dad only makes it more special and I owe it to you. The picture of my dad with a 5# walleye he caught hand lining with a grin from ear to ear is a memory you helped give me, thanks again. As soon as Hutch figures out the camera will get pic's online. Anything bright and flashy. CHAR.,PINK,BLUE. Of course they were painted by HUTCH. I honestly believe he does the best painting of cranks that I have seen. If there ever was a person able to think like a fish it is Hutch.

Bloob, Bloob Bloob. I'm glad I'm not a fish today because after the rain we got on Sunday I think what visibility we had is long gone. Pink and pearl was the color for the cranks and purple, " imagine that" was the color for the plastic on the dropper. But like I said, after the rain today it isn't gonna matter for a day or two now. Yea Mark with out a doubt it was a GREAT day. There's nothing I enjoy more than going fishing with your old man and PICKING on em all day long. I can get away with it, where as you'd be in the dog house for a LONG time if you said half of what I did. I know pops isn't a computer person at all but print him off a copy of this. Glenn old buddy and I do mean OLD. I bought you that clip on bell for your right hand today at Cabelas. So now your not gonna have any excuse for knowing when you get a strike while pulling wire.
Ya see the first 2 fish that Glenn caught handlining he didn't know he had on till we where bringing in the lines to make another run. Although I must admit there were just a couple of small sand pike. The third one was a " I just hit a BIG ROCK". Well that rock was a 17 + sauger. Then finally the big one he got for the day. Well he knew he had a fish on that one. Ya see buddy like I've told you for a long time, those who believe that handlining is only for the Spring, well they still got a thing or two to learn. Like I said I start pulling wire on the 1st of Jan. and quit the last day in Dec. I'm also VERY HAPPY to report that only Glenn had the ability, no luck, no SKILL to catch the only 2 sheephead. YOU ARE THE MAN, BUDDY!!!
Thanks for the kind words!!! It was good day to be out on the creek and I'm glad that you learned a thing or two. O'le fish brains, Hutch Mark, I also expect you to be notifying all of us when you become a GRANDPA for the first time here real soon. Ya know I guess that means your getting OLD too. Here's a SALUTE to all the veterans out there, it's your day!!!!!!! GOD BLESS YOU ALL!!!

There is no such thing as a bad day on the water with my buddy Hutch.
I've got handlining reels on my Christmas wish list. What an awesome way to present a lure. Besides that, after a few trips with Hutch, my daughter wants to know when we're going to get our own handlining stuff for when Hutch has clients.
During the week after Easter...after my wife and daughter and I went out with Hutch and boated 15 fish and lost several others....Hutch let me borrow his spare reel, and during the week my daughter and I ran a 3-way on one rod and handlined on the opposite side of the boat. After 5 days, the tally was 32 fish. 28 on the handline, 4 on the 3-way rod.
Now what am I gonna do with the 20 or so walleye rods that I have ?
