The following pictures are highlights of the guide trip with Jack Dunn the last few days. Jack wanted me to post these on WalleyeFirst to show you people (his friends) what fun he is having. He really misses keeping up with the board, but the cost of a laptop and connection, plus the time it would take from preparing for his guide trips, are too heavy a price to pay. For now, I am tired from a day and a half of fishing stuffed into 900 miles to work out some words to describe the trip, so check back in a few days and I'll spill some of Jack's beans! Jack and the beanstalk!:-) Edited by Rick Larson 7/22/2004 9:50 PM

Yep eyelunker, it is a damn fine boat! Skeeter, Jack guides on Mill Lacs in Minnesota. If your ever in the neighborhood, am sure Jack will make time for a guide trip.:-) Rippin, did I say anything about bobbers? LoL:-) And finally, for fever. Yes I did catch a few. Was having so much fun with Jack I just did what comes natural. There is a clue in a picture as to which walleye I caught. Can you figure it out??? Edited by Rick Larson 7/24/2004 8:16 PM

Thanx Shep, you and Rich are right on my contribution to the catch!:-) Jack is a master walleye angler on Mill Lacs, and when I mentioned of a trip towards his direction for business, was quick to take up his invitation to guide this great walleye fishing lake. Before going on to describe the events of this successful trip, just have to say that Jack is one of the most accomodating people I have ever met. He can converse about religion, politics, fish and fishing with much sincerity, having a mind towards another's opinion. Kinda reminded me of the diverse conversation skills of a barber! So with this backdrop, the fishing, as great as it was, became just a part of the total fishing experience I had with Jack Dunn. As we fished, he spoke of the history of Hennepin Island - named after Father Hennepin, a missionary before white settlement - who the Ojibway stranded on this small stone strewn dot of an island, and left for dead. And we caught monster bigger than GreenBay-sized smallmouth blackbass. No doubt this trophy bass fisherie has it's thanks (just as the thanks Father Hennepin had for the Sioux who saved him) to the larger than 21 inch size limit. We caught many of these acrobatic bulldogs in some of Jack's favorite spots. One in particular was so shallow and clear it was just as much a thrill to watch the bass compete for our offerings, as was the fight! So my earlier than planned arrival ended that evening with much satifaction mixed with the anticipation of learning the subtleties of catching walleyes on bobbers. And that we did, on a number of different locations and/or depths. In the beginning, much of the catching was done by Jack, as these fish did want a specific presentation that only a guy who was very experienced could pick up on. Believe me, it is alot more complicated than flinging a bobber out with a piece of worm - being quickly inhaled by a suicidal pirana bluegill. But it didn't take to much coaching by this famous Jackguide to get this story teller to tie into a fat 20 incher. Course, in the process of my learning ordeal, I had to endure some ribbing. After missing on a couple hooksets, Jack smiled and told me in no uncertain terms that this really was an easy way to catch fish. And it didn't help my ego any as it was said while playing his third fat tournament-sized walleye in about 20 minutes! Good God Jack, no wonder you cash so many checks fishing those Mill Lacs tournaments! Wish I could write on about the days and weeks of fishing with Jack on his lake, but this trip was over in what seemed like a blink of the eye. Mixed in with the conversation and fishing, were a number of side trips to islands and shallow rock piles in an effort to glimpse one of Mill Lacs huge muskies. We didn't find any this day, but the effort and his description of these torpedo-sized predators was more than enough for me to visualize. Jack, bud, after this next MWC tournament is over, will call and set a date for another trip. Save me one of those free days you have in August! Edited by Rick Larson 7/25/2004 8:01 PM

Member Posts: 714 | Whaoooo, what nice words! I don't think I'm worthy of such high praise. You've actually got me blushing here Rick. Yes it was a good day on the water. One thing Rick did not tell all you guys is that I told him at the start of the day, that this was my only day off that week and that I was using it to pre-fish for a "couples" tournament I had coming up that Saturday, and liked the idea of having another line in the water! ![]() We moved around a bit and tried several different depths and locations as the conditions changed. All in all, we had a great day. Rick took a number of pictures that he did not put up for all of you to see, one in paticular was taken the afternoon we went smallie fishing, it showed a real nice swirl on the surface of the water as a big smallmouth inhaled my topwater bait. I really liked that one, smallies on topwaters are one of the most exciting experiences in fishing. Rick didn't tell you about all the walleyes he saw either. A couple places I took him into were less than 5 feet deep, gin clear water, and teaming with schools of walleyes. I'm not talking a couple here and there, but 40-50 at a time and multiple schools, and they swam right under my boat so close you could tap them with the tip or you rod, but they WILL NOT BITE!! Rick was giggling like a kid on Christmas morning when he saw that. Yes, spending time on the water with good people makes for a great day. Edited by JLDII 7/27/2004 8:20 AM
