| A friend of mine recently picked up a 24ft ex japanese inshore patrol boat and it has 2 old mercury 50hp engines fitted. One of them has "Thunderbolt" ignition, which seems to be an advance / retard of the ignition in line with the throttle increase. The other is cosmetically the same but without the thunderbolt. They both have a chrome plated front to the engine cowelling which you take off first, followed by a couple of clips which release the piece surrounding the top of the engine and then finally you undo a clip at the front to take off the very top of the engine cover.
He is having a little trouble with the motoers and I wondered if anyone on here might know roughly how old the engines are and what the availability of spares is likely to be like. Thanks for your help.

| I've got a 76 - 70HP
Thunderbolt Ignition....sounds the same.....front piece comes off...then 2 clips and the cowling folds off to each side.

| If it says Kiekhaefer on the side and the power head is inline I would guess at late 1960's to early seventys, if Hydraulic trim has a seperate res, late 60's they used a L76V plug |
