Vikings exercise 2005 contract option on coach Tice

December 27, 2004
EDEN PRAIRIE, Minnesota (Ticker) - Not winning the NFC North title after a 5-1 start did not cost Mike Tice his job.

The Minnesota Vikings on Monday exercised the option on their coach for the 2005 season.

"Although the expectation of winning the division was not met, we feel the program Mike Tice has guided gives us the talent base to have success today and in the future," Vikings owner Red McCombs said. "Our expectations are high for the upcoming playoffs and for next year."

The Vikings (8-7) still have not clinched a wild-card berth. A loss by the St. Louis Rams on Monday night against Philadelphia will put Minnesota in the playoffs for the first time in four years. If the Rams win Monday, then the Vikings can seal a postseason berth with a victory next week at Washington.

Tice took over as interim coach of the Vikings with one game left in the 2001 season after Dennis Green resigned. He was named as the full-time coach in January 2002.

However, Tice has compiled a 23-25 record as Vikings coach. In 2003, Minnesota got off to a 6-0 start, yet lost seven of its last 10 games and failed to make the playoffs after a season-ending loss at Arizona.

This season, the Vikings started 5-1, yet squandered a chance to win the division after losing to the Green Bay Packers, 34-31 on Friday.

Isn't it great when a rival settles for mediocrity!!!

Jerry,

This is the second Viking thread you've started in about as many days.

Tice ain't so bad. Face it, we won't get a better coach for the price we pay him!

BTW,your heart felt concern for my team is very moving, and we are all touched by it, but.....if this continues I'm afraid some people might get the idea that YOU are a closet Vi-Queen fan yourself!!

I have been a Vikes fan since 1961...and it ain't easy.

But, shoot.....even the lowest paid coach should be able to figure out a way to get his guys to run one series of downs sometime during the season without a penalty. We got no "D" , as everyone knows......and the closest thing we got to "D" is a good running game that could eat a lot of time off the clock........BUT............What good is it to have a good running game if all the 1st down making runs get called back. AAArrrghhh!

I am not talking just the Packers game...all the losses (and there were many) where that way.

waaaa waaa waaaaaa

T-Mac and Jack, I sympathize with you. I come from a "mixed family"....three Viking's fans, two Bear's fans and me, the lone Packer fan. Sundays used to be the worst day of the week, back in the 70's and 80's. My Packers were so abysmal for so many years, it was difficult to look forward to the football season. But, since Favre and the good Reverend (God Rest His Soul) Reggie White, along with the folks who brought them to GB, Ron Wolf and Mike Holmgren, I've had a reason to be optimistic year after year.

At least the Vikes aren't pulling another 1998.....that had to be the most painful.

T-mac and jdl11 like jerry said us packers fans that were young in the 70's and 80's when the packers stunk know exactly how your frustration can only be cured by a winning season and finished off with a superbowl victory! The media and most packer fans are spoiled by the packers success in past 12 years(12 years of winning football) and i am one of them! This year was painfull to watch the packers play jeckle and hyde and the lack of quality players taken in the draft and no producing veteran brought in to camp.Remember its only a game and take time out enjoying whats really important in life like family and friends cause anyone of us could be here today and gone tomorrow "you wont find any viking or packers players" lining up at your funeral cause you stroked out or have a heart attack due too football hypertension. Everyone have a safe and happy new year
