Location: Gladstone, Michigan 49837 | A brand New Year is awaiting us anglers and it's looking like ice conditions are getting better and better each day.
WE will be just beginning our ice trips this upcoming week,
From the northern part of the Bay from the Kipling Launch ice thickness is between 5 and almost 12 inches of ice. Snow cover is almost completely gone due to the rains of 2 days ago. Walking and cleats and crippers are good aids in getting around.
Some snow cover will help us and it's predicted we are to get a possible couple of inches of snow tonight.
From the Gladstone Harbor Beach House area and south there are several clusters of shanties, travel out here has been mostly foot and ATV's usage. Ice thickness out here varying so use caution.
Traveling in and around Escanaba and open waters exist from just south of the Escanaba River all the way south of the Beach House areas. There are a good number of shanties in the Escanaba Harbor working the weedbeds and pockets there.
Access areas throughout the Bay are open and readily accessible to getting onto the ice.
The Days River DNR access sites both on the north and south side of the Days are open, Kipling Launch area along with the Gladstone Beach House areas along with another site just south of the Beach House area off of Lake Shore Drive, on the upper east end shore and you can access off the Vagabond Resort launch, driving about 4 more miles and you can readily go off the Hunters Point boat landing area.
In talking with a number of fisherman today most reported a slow to fair bite, methods being used and jigging Raps tipped with small minnows along with tip-up sets.
If your looking for an Ice Adventure let us take care of the whole trip for you from booking the lodging, to breakfasts and getting on the ice.
Keep in touch fisherman and we'll see you at the launch!
Here are a few photos also of todays research trip;
