I don't know if this is going to make any difference to any of you, but I'll be there too for any one who has guestions about the maps I do or how I process Doc's Lowrance log files (slg) to make maps for him.
In case you don't know what maps I'm talking about you can check this article Brad Dokken from the Grand Forks Herald did on my map of Devils Lake, and Doc's dream set up in his boat.

Its going to be a very informative class for beginners to pro's.
Remember, its this next Saturday, Nov 13, 2004 in Minnetonka. Now watch it snow.

Well, was the class worth it? I didn't get there right at the start but I thought it was good class. With what I do I'm heavily into this stuff but even I learned some new things. Just wish there had been more time.

Thought it was a very good presentation. First they covered the use of sonar. Very detailed graphics on one screen and running applications to show actual conditions being explained on another screen. Switching between a running Sonar Viewer and Emulator showed how to interpret information being talked about. Many questions were asked by audience were all answered in technical and layman's terms. Emulator showed how you actually operate Lowrance's equipment and the sonar viewer showed how recorded information can be obtained from a scrolling screen. Then after a good light lunch, they covered the operation of GPS units. How to save and manage files from the units to a computer using Lowrance, LakeMaster and Fugawi software. Then 'Doc' showed maps that Warren made for him from his recordings using the Fugawi software. Really needed more time to cover all of the material they had to present. Allot of material covered in too short a period of time. This was their first such school they held together and I would suggest a longer session or two days to cover all of the material. They both are very intellegent fishermen explaining the use and interpretation of information. Audience consisted of fishermen that used handhelds to 104's. 'Doc' has a video tape and a DVD that shows all about boat control and Lowrance equipment operation. You can find out about either one at the following site and is not an advertisement for either product. I am just telling you about what I thought about the school. Learned much more about interpretation of information being shown on equipment and settings for better and clearer information.

Yes, we will have a Lowrance School at Appleton Jan 6, 2005 to coincide with the NPAA meeting. It will be at the Woodfield Suites. For contact information see the original post.

This is a golden opportunity for anyone around WI that runs Lowrance Electronics. I've seen the Video. Amazed me how little I really knew about my units functions and shortcuts. I will be at this course. I'll be the one asking all the dumb questions.

Some thing to go with Doc's class. There's a program out called 3DField that will take a SLG file exported from SonarViewer "1.2.2" into a CSV file and make a map. It even has choices on how you want the map to look. I think Doc is going to touch on it, so if your thinking of making your own maps from Lowrance SLG files you might want to down load the sample program from http://3dfmaps.com/ . It will only let you use 50 points, but you can see how to load stuff and select the style of map you want.

I thought with the weather going to be in miserable zone out side this week end I'd mention Bruce Samson is giving another Lowrance School/Seminar at St.Cloud. Its kind of far from Devils Lake, but he might show the Cass Lake Imagery and maybe the Mississippi imagery/ COE maps/depth maps for multiple? pools if enough people let him know ahead of time they wanted to see them. The Mississippi is 3.5 Gigabyte, so its on the rather large size.

The closest this year to SE Wis will be Feb 26 Gander Mountain, Lakeville, MN or April 9 Joe's in St Paul, MN. If there are any changes in the schedule I update the Lowrance School at www.hightechfishing.com. We are working on one more school this year with many locations to pick from but fitting into our schedule is the main problem. Next year we will have the schedule out earlier and more locations. Doc

The question got asked on WC so maybe its a good time to bring it up here again since there've been two more classes, Appleton and St Cloud. What did you think of the Lowrance class and is there more or less of some thing you'd like to see. Another reason asking a review here is
maybe those who haven't gone to the class or bought the DVD can ask those who have, guestions.
I try to give Bruce good accurate feed back but I deal with electronics and software every day so I have a big advantage, I know how to program the VCR.

PS. For those in the Twin Cites area, as a favor for some one last summer I mapped Bone lake just east of me here at Forest Lake, MN. There are eye's in it and I think some one did an article on it in one of the Cities papers. The map isn't some thing I was looking to sell through bait shops so it might as well be used some how. I turned the contours into a trail file that can be used in the Lowrance units or on Fugawi. There won't be any numbers on the lines, but the lake is so straight up you can tell all the depths. In fact you can visualize them. Email me or if the guys on the site can distribute the USR file, let me know.
