Sunday 3 guys marked an open water spot off from Linwood road 3 1/2 miles out on their GPS. The ice shifted during the day and all three drove right into the open water on the way back in. They were in the water for almost 15 minutes before being rescued by passing fishermen and the Coast Guard. And just a few minutes ago, I talked to my Linwood road fishing spy who lives near Linwood corners on M-13. At 4:30pm he was out getting his mail when "Count em" 8 Coast guard vehicles, lights on, sirens blarring, pulling three rescue boats went by his house at (Mach I) headed for the light at Linwwod. Then 10 minutes later the Pinconning Fire departments Hover Craft (on the trailer) went flying by. Don't look good in mudville. I have a trip booked for tomorrow. Really makes me excited about heading out. ![]() ![]() Edited by walleye express 1/24/2005 7:26 PM

![]() Member Posts: 2680 Location: Essexville, MI./Saginaw Bay. | Wulp Rob. My bud was out Sunday off Linwood road as well. Said the crack was safe and seen no open water like those three unfortunet guys did. He figures they were farther NW towards/past Nayonquin Point and fishing the Black Hole. Bad area to come back from because of the shallow water bars over there. He was out almost 4 miles 20 FOW, and said he had close to 12 inches of solid clear ice. He didn't catch anything till 11:30 and then he went 3 for 5 and lost about an 8 pound Brown after he had it to the hole 5 times. Walleye were decent size. After tonights Coast Guard report from my bud, I'm steering SE from Linwood road tomorrow and away from that danger area. ![]() ![]() I also have a trip booked for either Saturday or Sunday, weather/wind permitting. I always thought it was safer to go north east from there? Rob. It is indeed towards the smoke stacks at the Consumer plant and the Hot Ponds, but you'd have to go about 8 miles across the bay to get to it. Herers a report I just posted about our trip yesterday on another board. Our plan was to hit 20FOW a little over 3 miles out from Linwood Road yesterday. I had a decent spot plugged into my GPS and off we went dead east towards it. 1.85 miles out I noticed a (Dark Spot) off to our right. It was open water on the far side of the jagged crack that snaked North and South for as far as we could see in both direction. I've seen and jumped many cracks on the bay, and the worse ones are always the jagged ones that cannot firmly come together and freeze. This is the type off Linwood Road right now. I might also mention that there are 2' or better wavelike snowdrifts similar to the kind we had last year, that along with the slush layer last year, made traveling out a nightmare. These can be plowed through with 4 wheelers fairly easy, but we seen several 3 wheelers getting stuck. Anyway, nobody was attempting to cross this crack, and everybody was setting up along it. At that point I punched in another of my spots south and in shallower water. The GPS arrow pointed directly along the crack and said 1.39 miles to location. This was perfect, as the crack itself seemed to work it's way farther East and away from the shore as it progressed towards the Karn Weadock smoke stacks. So off we went at my slow, steady pace. About .39 miles away from our new destination, I hear my buddy behind me on my dog sled yell, "STOP". I stop and he points to where my Otter Skin shanty is supposed to be hooked on the back of the dog sled. "IT'S GONE". It come unhitched and we cannot see it as far back as we can see. Well, I spun the 400 BIG Bear around and after three years of use, it finally got put into 5th gear. I don't really know how fast it goes top end, but my buddy Ray left finger prints in my dog sleds side rails from the ride he got back to where the shanty unhitched itself. Of course that was 1.39 miles back to where I cut her hard and turned towards our new destination. About this time it started to snow hard, and I made an executive decision. We're fishing right hear for tonight buddy. So we did. Long story short. We were in 15 FOW, surrounded by, and strung out for over a mile, about 150 other guys along this jagged crack. We had a total of 9 fish come into the hole all day, look our offerings over and leave. One fish slapped my minnow around a little to kill it and then left. We never seen or heard of another fish caught around us. The last fish we seen was around 3 o'clock and we fished till dark. This is never to say nobody caught any fish though. Everybody knows how ice fishing can be. All in all, the trip was invigorating and it felt good to be out of the house. Planning on hitting it again maybe Thursday with a friend and possibly with clients this weekend. I'll let ya know how it goes. Edited by walleye express 1/26/2005 9:23 AM

Still places around current breaks that are pretty thin, but 5 to 6 inches seems to be the norm right now. From what I've heard, the water is still like chocolate milk with the majority of fish being the small juvenile 11 to 13 inchers. Heres the Shiver on the River standing as of today. Shiver On The River Standings as of 1/26/05 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Here is the top 15 fish as of 1/26/05.
