Member Posts: 59 Location: Appleton, WI | I'm looking to see what kind of lines you all use when looking for walleyes. What kind color and # you use trolling on Winnebago for walleyes out in the flats and or on the reefs. Also what kind, color and # you use on the wolf river in the spring. And what kind, color and # you use when fishing slip bobbers. It's time to start thinking about getting the reels ready instead of waiting for the last minute. All help would be greatly appreciated.

Member Posts: 363 Location: Kaukauna WI | I personally use Ande Line ( http://www.andemonofilament.com/aboutande.htm ) for one it is reasonable at Sheels, Bass Pro or Cabalas. Strength and color depend on what conditions I will fish and application I will use that particular day. Typically I use either the http://www.andemonofilament.com/tournament.htm Green or yellow depending on water color and clarity. I here you should always build your rigs with a heaver line so they float up. I do this but look at application of building harnesses with not a great difference of line strength difference to a minor one of one I am using that day. Example if reel has 10 I have harnesses at 12. Hope this helps you and I will like to know others think also Edited by irishwebs 1/27/2005 11:10 AM

Member Posts: 2567 Location: Manitowoc, WI | For trolling, I use Berkley Trilene 10lb. XT in clear, as that is what the Precision Trolling manual is based upon. For jigging, it varies. Most of the time I use XT Solar or Sensation in the hi-vis green. For rivers with alot of snags, I go to Fireline in flame green color, 6/2 lb. For rigging or slip bobbers, I like Trilene XL with Vanish fluorocarbon leaders.

Member Posts: 2393 Location: Waukesha Wisconsin | My favorite line is PowerPro. It is an incredibly round, smooth, and sensitive line. In my opinion, PowerPro outperforms monofilament lines in any situation and leaves other superlines in the dust. The incredible sensitivity of PowerPro line enhances my catch ratio in a dramatic fashion. I can feel every action of the bait or artificial lure, transmitted to the rod tip, enabling me to set the hook at the first indication of a strike. The no stretch quality give me the edge to turn the fish away from snags and structure. This line has unbelievable strength-to-size ratio, near zero stretch and no reel memory. I can use 10 pound test that only has the diameter of 4 pound test line. This allows me to use lighter jigs or rigs on the Wolf River in spring. Attaching a monofilament leader to your PowerPro line may prove useful when bait or jig fishing requires extra finesse, especially in clear water, use a 3-foot monofilament leader to cut down on line visibility.

I've been a Trilene guy my whole life, 10LBxt clear for trolling, and 6LBxl jigging, in spring, (high fast water with lots of breakoffs and too many boats to fight with braids)...As the year progresses and current diminishes I will switch to a 6-2 fireline as last year that treated me well with small jigs. (slip bobbers are for lazy reef fisherman hehe sorry not my bag). Good Luck Tyee

Are you the guy on T.V. that can identify a 10 h.p. Merc, on the bottom of the lake, with his jigging rod?!!! ![]()

Member Posts: 378 Location: Omro,Wi. | Trolling with boards,I use Berkley Trilene 10lbXT Green, For hand trolling rods I have 10lb. Power Pro(when using power-pro for trolling, devide the distance back by two-thirds,to match up with the trolling guide books, for depth ie: 100 feet 10lb mono, now = 66 feet of 10lb.power pro).Jig rods (verticle jigging)have 8lb. Power Pro.Casting jigs,or fishing weeds,I go with the 6lb.Berkley TrileneXL Clear. Slip bobber rods are 6lb. Berkely TrileneXL Clear.Perch fishing rods have 4lb. Berkley Trilene XL Clear.

Member Posts: 129 | I use a couple of different 8/30 braids-Power Pro and Whiplash-for double-duty pulling in-line boards/dipseys/jets. I also use several linecounters spooled with 12 lb Sensation mono, which has 10 lb diameter for trolling cranks/spinners. 10/4 Fireline gets my vote for vert jigging on spinning set-ups because it's more manageable on spinning reels than braid for me. I don't use this technique alot, but I spool 8 lb Sensation for slip-bobbering. Tim Edited by Toolman 1/27/2005 8:01 PM

Member Posts: 50 | I'm with Dennis, John, Hafe and Toolman. Here's another vote for the Power Pro on the super line side. Best stuff I've found yet. When it comes to mono I put my trust in P-Line CX premium. Hutch As far as the 10 hp merc, not me. But I caught a bra on a dubuque rig once and just figured I had on a pair of biggins, does that count?? ![]()

Hands down MCCOYS MEAN GREEN for verticle jigging and weed fishing. It has very little memory, although its a little difficult to see. 6 and 8 lb works awesome!! ![]()

I think I'm going to give Power Pro a try this year. I have no experience with any "superlines". Two questions I have are, do I need to put a mono backing on my reel?? I've seen a few people mention using a mono leader, is this necessary all the time?? I both situation above, what type of knot are you using to connect the two lines together?? Thanks guys. Labs----side note----I've registered here but never seem to be able to log in. I've tried re-registering but they recognize my log in name. Any one have similar problems. Have not heard back from the admin yet.

Member Posts: 105 | I will also go with power pro, great stuff. Yes you should back with mono, as far as the joining not goes I believe its called a uni- to uni knot either way in the powerpro box it shows diagrams as to how to tie the knots needed. One thing that I dont think was mentioned here is that it has ZERO strech, that being said when you troll with it your rod should have plenty of give or you will lose some fish especially at high speed, I will set my drags a little on the loose side when trollong so I don't pull the hooks throug and lose fish. For ALL my bass baitcasting gear i use cajun red line, the normal stuff in 14-20lb, and for all my spinning reels i use cajun red cast in 8-10lb. For vertical jigging in rivers i use 8/2 flame fireline.

Dumb question here but I have to ask: Why do these superlines need to have a mono backing??? Is it the same for all of them meaning, Fireline, Spiderwire, Power Pro???? Thanks, Labs

Member Posts: 59 Location: Appleton, WI | Thank-you all for the info on lines. I think I'm going to try the PowerPro out. Sounds like alot of you guys use it and with good success. Not sue if I should put 8# or 10# on the trolling rods with the planer boards. But will try one and see what kind of results I have. Not sure which one yet for jigging on the river but will put 6# on for the slip bobbering. I wish I knew what kind those guys were using on the river last year. They were catching walleyes 10 to my one. They must have had some very sensitive line on to feel those light hits. I know was bright green in color but not sure what kind of line. Maybe it was the rod they were using that made it so easy to feel the hits?? Whatever it was, I wish I knew so I could try it and maybe put more fish in the boat. You tourney guys no so much more than us rookies and it's great to hear your ideas and suggestions on fishing techniques. Thanks again!!

Member Posts: 1188 Location: Chicago IL. | When jigging on the MISS and IL, I use 10lb. On my trolling rods ,I use 15 or 20lb. Just remember 3 things : #1 use mono backing to reduce slip #2 Wind on the reel tight #3 Loosen your drag a bit and you dont need those major hook sets.
