Member Posts: 714 | We've all heard and read about changing the size of the hooks on a crank bait to have better results, but has anyone ever experimented with changing the size split rings holding the hooks to improve, or shall I say, "free up" the action of a lure? It seems to me that if you have larger split rings, the lure would be able to wobble easier, and wider than with a smaller split ring.

Person that would be a great resource on this is SuperFreak Dave can give many years of insite on this for I truly think he has done a test marketing of this subject with Ka Boom Lures.

Member Posts: 88 Location: Oklahoma | First, in my experiences I have come up with the following regarding slpit ring size. Main concern is that the ring is of appropriate size in relation to the eyelet size in the lure itself. By using a small diameter eyelet (necessary in smaller lures, as there is little room for a large one, say in the tail for instance. If the rings does not swing freely in the eyelet on the lure, then ikt will bind, and cause the hook to stick in various positions, and adversly affecting action of the lure. Most of my lures take a size 2-1/2 ring, in all eyelets, including the nose/point of pull. With my eyelet size being rather small because my lures are not large, this is an ideal size ring for my baits. The ring must hang loose. Typically, you can place a larger ring on larger lures, or larger eyelets, but as you might guess, any added weight, even as small as a bigger ring, will affect the swimming action of the lures. It may not affect it so greatly that it will not swim fine, just will not likely be the "optimum" swimming action that we test for when we determine factory sizes. We place the largest possible rings/hooks on our baits so that the best overall swimming performance is obtained. Just remember, that it sometimes is best to leave the lures as they come. As changes are made, it will be hard for anglers to remember which lures do what, and might get confusing. By the way, if anyone has any problems with any of my lures regarding rings or hooks, please let me know. I hope my input adds a little thought to the subject! Dave

Member Posts: 104 Location: Laona, Wisconsin | Another question. What about the split rings on the tip or bill of a lure? Have seen guides that take the split rings off and just attach a the lure with a Duolock snap right to the lure eye. They say it will increase the action of the lure. Will this increase or decrease the action of the lure? Just wondering if I should remove my split rings for better lure action.

Member Posts: 2680 Location: Essexville, MI./Saginaw Bay. | Jack. Hate to say it, but your bigger split ring idea is an old one. Us guys who have been salmon fishing since the early 70's have not only been changing out the smaller split rings to bigger one's, but adding a split ring on the front of spoons as well for even better lure actions. Also been doubleing up on the rings (explained below) on the old 1/2 ounce Hot-N-Tot's and the new Winning Streaks, for river kings for many years. And for you River Salmon, Steelhead and open water Muskie fisherman, I have yet another split ring idea/tecnhinque past on to me by the worlds oldest/best Lake St.Claire Muskie guide, that keeps the hooks from being dislodged during the fierce spinning/twisting fights these species give. Replace the Split rings that come on your lures now with two, same size 2X split rings. Thats right, one split ring attached to another split ring and then the treble hook. What this does is give your trebles a 360 degree turning radious, versus the 180 they have now before jamming agains't the lure body or split ring eye. I probably don't need to explain the spinning and turning any of these species do when hooked. I honestly only replace the back hooks with this remedy, but see no problems with doing both. The action will change slightly, but not enough I've noticed to change the fishes attitude towards your offerings. Proof (as always) pictured below. Only guys who fish river kings would understand what the catching ratio of a 7 for 7 day means on the river. I do believe this double split ring idea has helped me improve my own (in the boat) charter ratio. Member Posts: 2680 Location: Essexville, MI./Saginaw Bay. | Jake. The one and only trip I took on the St.Claire was with him after he had been retired a few years, and a relitive of his who owned and operated the charter boat we were on. It's been so many years ago now, that the only thing that I remember is we caught 9 muskys that day, 8 on the down rods working in the wash behind the boat. And this tidbit of knowledge concerning the double Split rings, that I immediatley noticed on the Believer plugs we were trolling with. I incorporated it with my Salmon trips that fall, and my (in the boat) catch rates went up big time. Edited by walleye express 2/10/2005 5:56 PM
