New User Posts: 1 | I'm currently buying a new boat. The dealer is recommending a a 40 horse Evinrude E-tec. I was thinking about a 50 horse 4-stroke. The only thing I know about the E-tec is what I got off the Evinrude web-site, it looks good. Any suggestions? | ||

Member Posts: 39 Location: Coatesville, PA | Most outboard manufacturers besides Bombardier, are concentrating on 4 strokes. Yet the Bomb seems to be betting it all on their E-Tec. If I were you I'd go with my gut feeling and get a 4 stroke. I'm running a 50HP Honda, it's the lightest 50HP four stroke on the market. I don't think anyone can discredit the Honda reliablity. | ||

I have a 50 E-tec tiller, I wish I had the 4stroke I had on my old boat ,it was much smoother. 50 E-tec is a two cylinder and not nearly as smooth as a four stroke In fact if want want I will make you one heck of a deal on my E-tec. | |||

I think it's quite simple. Do you want an engine that is simple in design and will not require frequent tune-ups and valve adjustments? If yes, get the E-tec. Do you enjoy doing oil changes and the hassle of disposing of waste oil? If not, get the E-tec. From an environmental standpoint I think all the new engines are comparable. I think the overall performance edge goes to E-tec as well. I am not a pro. I have no dog in this fight. I currently run a Merc. 2-stroke, and am thinking of upgrading. Just my 2 cents worth, good luck with your decision! | |||

What do you do with your lower unit oil??? Still have to change it unless you like rolling the dice. I have an e-tec by the way. In this HP range, I think power/weight ratio is more critical than larger HP engines. Have no idea what they are currently, worth looking at. Also, you need to look at tiller handle designs, all are not equal. | |||

Location: Rhinelander | The E-Tec series from Evinrude are two stroke DFI engines. Are they magic? No. Are they greener than 4 srokes? Yes. Are they lighter, faster and more fuel efficient? Yes, but so are the DFI motors from the other builders. Compare 2 stroke to 2 stroke, and 4 stroke to 4 stroke. The E Tec is a fine outboard, no question, and will be around for a very long time. | ||
