Member Posts: 2567 Location: Manitowoc, WI | I don't get to many chances to fish Winnebago in the fall with the bite on Bay de Noc and hunting. Just wondering what's going on? Is there a good bite at this time or not? Haven't seen too many reports as of late, so I assume not much is up other than duck hunting.

Member Posts: 103 Location: Collins, WI | I was out off the east shore on New Year's day. Walked out about 1/2 mile or so just off the reef in 16 or 17 fow. I was able to catch 4 eyes, all between 15 and 16 inches. We also had some whitebass and the dreaded sheephead. Caught them jigging a rapala within 2 feet of the bottom. Headed back out there Sat. morning to see if the fish will cooperate a little better. My partner for the day caught 1 small walleye on a tip-up and 3 or 4 w-bass. Water is really dirty and there's a pretty good current for some reason. Ice was around 10 inches where we were but the rumor has it that it is spotty at best. Use caution, that water is cold! By the way, have a nice day!

Jerry, The fish are all over out from the river. Perch, catfish, sheephead, carp,..... I have not had fish jump through the holes but enough action to keep you busy. Lots of very nice perch and a few eyes to mix in along with an occasional white bass. A camera has bee very important to catching these fish. Find the active schools and fish about 2 feet off the bottom. Even the perch that I am getting are coming ff the bootom about a foot or 2 feet. The eyes that are feeding are coming up to the bait. I have not caught a fish off the bottom yet. I have been using the VS 560 camera with an upviewing technique where I have set the camera on the bottom of the lake and have the camera rotated to look up towards the ice. While panning I have seen the fish high and also can see the fish that are tight to the bottom. It has been a huge help in catching these fish. Find the active fish and drill lots of holes. You will catch a few. Troy

Member Posts: 1314 Location: Menasha, WI | Went out from Payne's Point yesterday from 2:30-5:00. Set up near a reef I've been told is called the Wonder Bar (?). Punched holes from 18'-10' and hopped around a lot. Of course, because I had to leave at 5, I didn't mark a fish until 4:40 and caught my first one at 4:46 (10")and my second at 4:53 (less than 10"). Oh well, two dinks are better than my previous outings. I'll give her a go again on Sunday. Edited by Viking 1/26/2005 7:04 AM

Member Posts: 1314 Location: Menasha, WI | I was out this morning from 6:00-9:30. I decided to try something completely different, so I fished out from the Neenah lighthouse. I started in 4' of water as close to the river as safe ice allowed. I marked a lot of fish before sun up, but couldn't get any takers; I'm guessing they were sheephead. As daylight hit, I moved east into 10' feet; nothing, not even a mark.

Member Posts: 5 | We've been fishing off of Oshkosh near Gehrke's Reef just east of the ice shove and also off Quinney about 2.5 mi. My dad and I have been out four times in the last month and we've had 11 walleyes all between 17 and 26 inches. We've also pulled in two five gallon pails of white bass, three burbot, and a perch or two. The best bite seems to be on a hammered copper (golden) pimple and also on a black jiggin rap. We've used the tiger (yellow/green/orange) rap, but have only pulled in one on it. We don't tip them with anything. My friend Mike pulled in a beautiful 27 in walleye right off the river to the west of Waverly yesterday. It was a big, fat, beautiful fish!! He was using shiners. I have a vexilar, and personally, I wouldn't trade it for the world. I generally jig about two feet off the bottom, but when you have a suspended fish in 10 feet of water, it's easy to see and yank your jig up! It's invaluable on the ice! Anyway, we'll be back on the ice this weekend.......I'll post report then. Tight lines and happy fishing!

Member Posts: 5 | We had three walleyes today all after 4 pm. Biggest was 22 inches. Hopefully that nice bite will be on tomorrow right before the front hits. My buddy Kenny fished closed to us today and had a 5.3 lb 26 1/2 inch walleye today right around 3:30pm caught on a golden pimple. What a dandy!! They all seem to be nice and fat......very healthy fish! Anyway, happy fishing! More ice to come for me on Monday!! I'll post then

Member Posts: 5 | You know what!? I don't drill the holes, Dad does. Haha, but by educated guess and Dad's comments about not getting the auger threw, ice thickness is right around 20 inches.....we're a little to the north of Gehrke's, not right over it. I have a question for the more experienced fishermen. I have an F8 Vex and I've been wondering whether it's worth upgrading. I really like it and it works well, but I keep hearing people talk about how the 18 is so much better. Is it really? Any information would be great. Thanks in advance....

Member Posts: 701 Location: upper michigan | i am running a vex but i am really thinking hard about the lowrance x67c or the x68c with gps http://www.lowrance.com/Marine/Products/X67C_ice.asp these can be run in flasher mode or in graph mode the nice part about the graph mode is that you can get a feal for the size of the fish where as witha flasher a mark is a mark weather it is 3 inches or 14 inches. http://www.lowrance.com/Marine/Products/M68CSMap_ice.asp Edited by butch 2/28/2005 7:08 AM

Member Posts: 2567 Location: Manitowoc, WI | I had the opportunity to run the Lowrance x68 over the weekend up on Big St. Germaine Lake. An awesome on the ice tool, with the GPS option, flasher, and regular LCD screens available. The increased sensitivity of this unit is impressive as compared to the flashers that are available. I will definitely have one next year.

Sensitive in what way? I am a Vex man but I am looking at a newer unit for next season and the x67 intrigues me. Edited by Viking 2/28/2005 11:50 AM

Member Posts: 2567 Location: Manitowoc, WI | Viking and all, I've been a Vex user since 1995. Had my FL-8 since then and loved every minute of it. I got the chance to attend a tutorial on Lowrance equipment and was totally impressed with the Lowrance x67 and x68. Great graphics, better fish marking capabilities than any flasher unit and these units can be used in a flasher mode for those who prefer that look. The 320V x 240H pixel resolution with it's color clarity and contrast, wide viewing angles, plus sharp target detail and separation make these units the ice machine of choice. Over the weekend, I got to use one on the ice for the first time. Took it out in deep water on Big St. Germaine Lake and was again impressed with this unit. We were in 25 ft. of water and marked perch right on bottom, along with our 1/64 oz. jig. The GPS version, which is the x68, is easy to use and has the same versatility as the x67. These units come with a molded tray with battery well and battery tie-downs, 256-color performance, an exclusive sonar mounting bracket with adjustable tilt, a swing-out transducer outrigger, rechargeable 12 volt 7-amp gel cell battery and charger, a water repellent soft pack nylon carrying case and a 200 kHz transducer for ice fishing with up to a 60 degree wide fish detection coverage when used in high sensitivity. With it's 800 watts peak-to-peak power, it's more sensitive and powerful than any unit available at this time.

Was on the LBDN website and found this nice link that gives an example of how the Lawrance X67 can be used in graph mode while ice jigging. Don't know how the video will work with dial up but cable modem is great. I don't ice fish that much but if I did I would buy this unit. Can do graph as well as flasher. Seems like a slam dunk to me. Would also work as a great second graph in the boat. Unit comes with two transducers, one for ice and the other normal. http://easylink.playstream.com/baydenoccharters/010905_1_fish_jiggi...

Member Posts: 1314 Location: Menasha, WI | Excellent post Jerry, thanks. That's the kind of review on the X67 that I've been looking for -someone that has been a Vex user and can provide a quality, experienced assessment. Thanks Guest. That video is nice.

Member Posts: 215 | I switched from the Fl8 to the 18 a couple of years ago and when fishing deeper water it is great to have the zoom feature along with the low power built right into the unit. I use it on the front of the boat in the open water season and find that the bottom lock feature gives a great impression of what the bottom structure is doing along with bottom composition. I've been real happy with it although I liked the FL8 too.
