Member Posts: 2680 Location: Essexville, MI./Saginaw Bay. | I just got back in from the garage after about 2 hours spent cleaning my Jet Boat from bow to stern and inside and out, from yesterdays trip on the Tittabawassee. No...my clients yesterday were not a couple of slobs and trashed the boat, nor did they bring along any of the Boat Carpet NO-No's, like potato chips and Mom's home made crumb cookies. They simply tracked in what is usually tracked in during the expected normal use of a day in the outdoors. But I seem to have personally progressed to the next level of Obsessive Compulsive Boat Cleaning Disorder (OCBCD). I knew I had the OCD part a long time ago, almost as soon as I actually had to purchase my first adult outdoor toy with my own money. All of a sudden, keeping that thing looking clean and new was very important to me. But from those humble beginnings, a real monster has reared it's ugly head. I mean, (and keep this under your hat) how many people use their wives Hoover Windtunnel vacuum to clean their boats? It's those beater brushes I like, that really deep cleans the Ol'Boat carpet. I think the first clue to my disorder comes when either clients or friends are asked to wash their shoes or boots off in the water, before stepping into my boat. The mere sight of a muddy or sandy footprint on the carpet all day is like an itch I can't scratch. And the guys who clean the weeds, dead leaves and debre off their jigs, and throw them (in the boat) get my special attention. The word "Special" in this case, loses much of it's intended meaning. So is there help for me? Some focus group that deals with this particular problem? Or am I doomed to continually receive that often stated sentence "Man this boat looks like brand new" compliment?

Member Posts: 299 Location: Wind lake, Wi | Dan, I have OCBCD also. It all started one year when it seemed like everything in the boat was in the way and I could not find the pliers and other things. Finally I said to myself this boat is staying clean and organized from now on. I would make sure that everything had a place and I also made sure that anything that was taken out was put back immediatley. One thing that really got to me was when the worm dirt was all over the boat. I fixed that by putting the worms in a small container with some water in it. I also seem to vaccum out the boat almost every time I get back from the lake. And one thing I always do is wipe the boat down as soon as I pull the boat from the water. I have OCBCD and glad that I do.

Member Posts: 2680 Location: Essexville, MI./Saginaw Bay. | Welcome to the club and be strong brother.... I'll be looking into the prospects of posting a OCBCD Hot Line in the future. And may even come out with a handy suggestions list on how to ecologically and enviromentally clean your boat while on the water, and inbetween landing fish. Location: Midland, MI 48642 | Well its time to come out of the closet. I have been suffering witht this problem for a long time myself. Glad I am not alone. Mine also seemed to start when I first purchased a car and noticed the problem was just as bad when I purchased my boat. My wife is a Counselor but tells me there is no help. Because of my O.C.B.C.D I became a distributor for the boat cleaning products I now sell. It helps a lot to have the right stuff to do the job on the boat. Have a nice day brothers, see you at the meetings if I am not fishing or cleaning my boat and we ever get a night set aside to have them. Skeeter

And no everybody, this wasn't a post ploy to re-introduce the boat cleaning products that Skeeter sells. But I will honestly say, his products have helped both my rotator cuffs and tennis elbow problems, because of the application and removal ease that his products have. And if they didn't meet my OCBCD addicted quality expectations, like everything else I've tried that didn't work, it would be terminated with extreme prejudice.

Member Posts: 171 | I'm wondering how I can actually catch this OCBCD? I have a hard time getting the motivation to clean the boat after spending a strenuous day on the water, can you help?

Member Posts: 188 Location: Westland, Mich. | dan: if it was't for that mud slick at the ramp we could have made less of a mess in your boat. to the untrained (non Obsessive Compulsive) eye, everything would look shipshape. pat and i both tend to keep our boats up and we both have a low tolerance for slob types. that kind of person could get a trip cut short and or no invitations on future 5ad trips. at the time of our dicussion of Obsessive Compulsive types it did't seem to me that you had the disorder. it became painfully obvious after you retieved your boat and began to wipe her down. skeeter would have been so proud, lol. while that kind of activity cuts into time that could be well spent on other activities, your boat is proof that a LOT of tlc will have good results. next time i'm aboard i'll bring some surgical booties .

Member Posts: 538 | Rob, If you don't have it now you will not catch it. It is not communicable... Dan, I believe I was implanted with the disease from my late father. He was strong on the belief that a dirty car reflected poorly on a person. When I run into folks they always ask if just boughty another new toy. My boat (1992) and my truck (1992). Worm gunk and fish blood on or about the boat either get quick action on the boat, or fester in the corner of my mind until a remedy is at hand. We could have worse habits! I think folks appreciate a clean boat and it represents an orderly and proffesional operater. Wear the badge proudly. Take care, Jim O

Location: Rhinelander | Over the winter I clean probably 35 boats up from salt, dirt, and nasty at the shows. Bring them in, clean them up, shine them up, two days later take them back out and run 'em down the road in the salt, dirt, and nasty. Same in the Summer, because the boat is a show piece and has to be always clean. I'm so badly afflicted, sometimes I wax my boat because I'm bored.

Member Posts: 3899 | I try to keep my boat clean. I find the best way for me is to wipe it down at the launch after loading. Helps keep the water spots to a minimum. Also, helps keep the black motors nice and shiny. As for the carpet, I clean it good once per year, unless it gets really bad from muskie slime. I vaccuum it weekly. I like to keep things organized in the boat while fishing, and tend to move tackle boxes/bags to the bow while trolling. I hate tripping over, and stepping around this stuff while setting up, and reeling in fish. I once knew a guy, that made you take the crawler out of the container while holding it over the side of the boat, and wash it off in the water, before bringing it into the boat. He couldn't stand the thought of a single grain of worm dirt on his carpet. He also washed/vaccumed the boat after every trip, and waxed it probably 5 times a year. He also washed and WAXED his lawn mower after every use. Talk about OCD! He had it bad! Edited by Shep 3/7/2005 9:53 AM

I'd ask for his name and address, but might not like what he's become if he wants to contact me.

Member Posts: 57 | Well I guess it is time to come out of the closet. I have it and it is bad, I have been known to pull out the scuff remover and remove the scuff while we are fishing. I have a white glass boat and it scuffs easy on the inside. I also bought a extra piece of carpet and lay it down as a carpet runner to protect the floor. Now here is one that has kept me awake at nights this whole winter, since I moved to Michigan my boat does not fit in the garage and has been stored all winter in a friends barn and not a nice comfy garage. I sure hope she forgives me this weekend when I go pick her up.
