I have a 91' Johnson 60h.p. tiller and had it out last weekend.Letting the motor warm up it ran fine, left the dock and started to run the r.p.m.'s up and at full throttle it seemed to only go about 15 mph.,like something was holding it back so I kept going and finally it just got going normally and ran great for a couple hours.Got done fishing and put stuff away in the boat for the ride back and it did the same thing for a while. My question is for all the knowledgeable fisherpersons on this site , would it be my fuel filter or is there something else I should check out. Thanks in advance, Later zeke01

New User Posts: 1 | Are you running with last years fuel? If that's the case I'd try new fuel or cleaning the carb. A new fuel filter is never a bad thing.

Member Posts: 39 Location: Coatesville, PA | You state that you ran it up to full throttle and it only went about 15 MPH. Did it in fact reach full throttle on the tach, or wouldn't it come up to full throttle? The reason I ask is that if it was coming up to full throttle, you could have a hub spinning issue with the prop. I had that happen one time, the motor revved up but the boat would just start to crawl, and then finally get up to speed. If you just nursed the throttle up, it would come up to speed okay.

Still having the problems folks.I have changed the fuel filter, changed plugs, checked the plug wires, new gas.Could it possibly be the coil and if so how do I locate it and what does it look like, can it be tested? Any help would be appreciated. Later zeke01

Member Posts: 540 Location: Milw, WI | I have a 93 johnson tiller. I Know it is your power pack.( module ) It contains the coils, should be $90 - 120 bucks. You can replace it your self. This will fix your problem. Edited by Richfish 4/26/2005 12:46 PM

Member Posts: 540 Location: Milw, WI | It is the black box that your spark plug wires come from I belive. That is the way it is on mine. Might be diff. between the years. There are some online parts place that migt show it. Not shure about there addy. Will look for my shop manual for the johnsons if I need to.

Last night I checked to see if each cylinder was getting spark.I found out that #1 and #3 were getting spark but #2 is not.It looks like each cylinder has it's own coil so I took #1 coil and #2 coil off and took them to work this a.m. and tested them. There is a definite difference inbetween the two,I am hoping this is the problem. What do you guys think? Member Posts: 3899 | Are these separate coils? Maybe put the #1 coil on #2 and see if you get spark there?

Shep:That's exactly what I'm going to try next to see what happens there. If I take a "good" coil and put it on #2 cylinder and still don't get spark,I think it's a no brainer on #2 coil is junk. Thanks guys later zeke

Member Posts: 540 Location: Milw, WI | Maybe one bad coil, but it is more. Your problem, power pack(module) is worn out. You just can check them coils with a multi-meter, no need to move them around. Heats up shorts out runs like crap. Then runs good, servicre dept. will not even find it for you. Starts just fine, hit the the gas builds then just fisses out but still runs. Some times you run great till it heats up, then no more than 1/4 power. But no alarms going off. Take it in and all will check out fine, because they never run it long enuff. Keep useing it and it will strand you on the water, you let it cool and it will fire back up in a hour. But head back to the trailer cause you are neer done. $1500 in service bills and finally got the tech out on the water in the boat. He had power pack (module) with us. Changed it back at the pier at his house. All was good.....was $90 part back then. Million dollar head ache. If the coil has continueity they will spark, but the module must tell it to spark. Res. will not be same on all of they are used, but you need to know service range for Ohms. If you are near me, I will come over and show you. e-mail me at [email protected] Edited by Richfish 4/27/2005 11:16 PM

Member Posts: 859 Location: Appleton wi | another way to test your coils is take the boat down to the water at nite and fire her up with engine cover off. If one coil is bad you will get electrical leakage and you will see it coming off the coil.

Richfish,I did the switch over of the coils and had spark on all three cylinders. Was really scracthing my head then.Left it alone for a while and came back to it and tried again and this time had no spark on #2 again.I am literaly frustrated with this as to what the actual problem is.I don't doubt you at all with the idea of the module, however I can't return it if it's not the problem. I live in Neenah and my boat is kept at my brothers which is about 2 miles away. Thanks alot for your input and any other suggestions are greatly appreciated. Later zeke01
