Organizing GPS data……

I have way too many GPS waypoints and icons! If I try loading all my waypoint data to my Lowrance unit it fills all possible storage and will not download all the waypoints. So, I started making separate files for a couple of very large individual lakes. Obviously, the large bodies of water consume the most waypoint memory so I saved all Green Bay and Lake Winnebago data onto separate files.

The problem that I am having is that this takes me hours to do. Using Map Create, I bring up ALL of my waypoints from around the country and then I have to individually select every one that I do not want and delete them. So far, I have successfully created separate files for these two bodies of water but it has taken me over 6 hours to do.

Does anyone have a better way of doing this? Is there a better software program out there that will do this quicker? I would think that I should be able to select waypoints using a window command and then just hit the delete key. This would save me lots of time. Any suggestions?

Dennis,

I started doing this for the Posse two years ago at Lake Erie. I use map create. First, I would get all their files using unique filenames. Then I would put all these into one data file(Copy/Paste). Then I sort by date. I select the waypoints I do not want, and delete them. You can use the shift key and left button to select a group of waypoints to delete or copy. Left click on the first file, and then scroll down, hold the shift on the last in the group, and left click. Then go to edit and delete. Repeat until you are done. It takes me about 1/2 hour to do these, and get them in their units.

And I agree, you do have wayyyy tooooo many waypoints saved. I went to clean my X-15 from last year, and it took several minutes to save to MMC, and another several minutes to purge them!

With the maps for units out today I hardly ever feel the need for way points anymore. I used a friends chip on Winnebago last year and it was full, I could'nt even read the map. I use 1 waypoint as my starting point then watch the map and use the plotter screen to follow the same path or vary it every pass. I use a log to put me back in the areas from year to year, but delete all the junk after a tournament. I keep good notes from year to year and reveiw them to recall the situations. The old days of having 100's of waypoints stored are over for me!

I have a lowrance global map and an x-19c/gps. On the global map i have all of my gps waypoints listed along with a lakmaster chip. On the 19 i just have the lakemaster chip going. When i need to mark a spot it is entered into the globalmap with the touch of a button. If i need to find a contour i keep my x19 on and find what im looking for. I used to just use a garmin gps3 for my waypoints but recently upgraded to the global map.

I'll go along with Gordy on this one. I've got waypoints for launches in case of bad weather as well as some hard to find rockpiles etc. Most of my trolling paths are just one waypoint and I know which direction to go. Seems easier for me. Some of my old reliables I don't save because I can usually find Sunshine there anyway, I just look for him LOL!!!!!!!!

Sorry Dennis, I just couldn't resist that one.

Sunshine, I purchased a software called expertgps which I purchased on line at www.easygps.com. I used it to download my gps coordinates from my Garmin 162 , then reformat them to a Lowrance file and uploaded thriu the memory card to my 3500C. Although I have not tried to create file gruops yet it looks to me like it will do what you are looking for. You should be able to create groups of waypoints and then set up seperate files and use them as you need them.
It costs like $59 but saved me a ton of time. With some helpfull advice from some guys online I made the decision to go this route and the actual process took about 15 minutes.

Dennis, Yes for Otter but no for Merc. I've still got the wrong color motor. If we showed up with a Yamaha we'd be like skunks at a lawn party!!!

Thanks Jet Man,

I'm playing with the suggested software right now.

The have a free trial version. For others, this software has been suggested by many.
