I just returned with my family from Lake Cumberland, KY. It's an awesome place with gorgeous scenery and a totally family friendly environment.

We saw countless wild turkeys, whitetail deer and other wildlife to keep the kids and the adults happy.

The lake itself is beautiful. Right now it's experiencing some blight of a trash dump that flooded and a variety of items slipped into the water, but as soon as that's cleaned up the lake will rival any other in the country for beauty.

The launching facilities are outstanding. The State Park Dock rents huge houseboats if you want to be on the water 24/7.

Rock bluffs and a dense carpet of deciduous trees abound. I imagine in the fall the colors are dramatic and absolutely lovely.

We stayed at the Lake Cumberland State Resort Park (270-343-3111). We had flocks of wild turkeys roaming outside our cabin windows every morning. Very cool!

I would recommend spending a week in this beautiful part of our country to anybody.

The fishing is excellent here; bass, stripers, bluegills to die for, and excellent walleye fishing. The thermocline hasn't set up yet here, so the fish are scattered. I know of two walleyes caught in the 12# class during pre-fish, and the overall numbers at the PWT aren't bad at all, with 388 fish caught so far. This is a good fishery with alot going for it right now.

Fishing wasn't too bad. We targeted bass and panfish for the little ones. Absolute ton of panfish. Lots of good bass too and stripers all over the place.

I didn't try for walleyes since the PWT was in full pre-fish and tournament mode. They are there, especially the 2-4 pound fish.

Steve is right, the fish were scattered all over. I spooked a school of stripers that must've had over 100 fish. It was cool stuff. I'd take the clan down again for a week of fishing and fun.

The summer is their busy season so if you can plan a trip the week after Memorial Day before all of the kids get out of school it isn't too crowded on a 60,000-plus acre reservoir.

Been there i lived in ky for a couple years it is absolutley a great place to go for a vacation. The walleyes are actually plentiful down there, seems like not to many fish for walleyes them in the south. I only knew of a few that would go for them down there.

It's one of those fisheries few in the traditional "walleye belt" can relate to. The food sources are plentiful, the water clear and the boating pressure is intense. This drives most of the action to the middle of the night.

This includes the walleyes, stripers and a lot of the larger bass. There was plenty of boating action at night. You could hear engines idling throughout the night hours.

As far as the walleye fishing being terrific, I can't speak to that. After hearing the DNR biologist speak about what they put into the lake and their numbers during their surveys the fish are there. It's a matter of putting them in the boat during the daytime hours.

As far as a place to vacation and catch some fish, it's top notch.
