Heres both yours and many others biggest hurdle. "Personally prefer cranks, but lack enough success with harnesses to have confidence to stay with it".
Often when using one or the other techniques, your fishing for different fish that are in different moods and often in different water columns. And then add that your boats presentation, the gear and a few other dynamics have to be almost totally different to present the two techniques properly, and having the confidence in the one less used, becomes that much harder to do and to stick with.
When running as many as 10 lines at certain times on my charters, I looked for ways to run both with some success. I kinda solved these problems myself to a degree a couple of years ago. I started running something I invented called "Spoon harness rigs" I use these as sliders above crankbaits with either "Gulp Crawlers" or the real deal. I experimented for a while with different rig configurations until I got one that tracked and worked at speeds up to 3.5mph, so I could run both them and the crankbaits while sticking to just one trolling regiment.
Now, this isn't to say that switching over to the proven methods to trolling strictly with harnesses won't out produce my little fix when the circumstance demand it. But I really like knowing that I got both cranks and meat working for me at the same time, and that one isn't cramping the others style while doing so.
