CABELA’S MWC CENTRAL DIVISION
FINISHES ON THE BAY OF GREEN BAY

Menominee MI – All eyes fell on the Bay of Green Bay as anglers from eight states completed the Cabela’s Masters Walleye Circuit tournament in the Twin Cities of Menominee, MI and Marinette, WI. A full-field of over 200 boats completed the end of the season for the Central Division, crowning tournament winners with $25,000 and Division Team of the Year with a $6,435 bonus.

Brothers Brad and Kurt Knoll from Appleton and Menasha, Wisconsin logged an early noon arrival on Saturday with a 37.16 pound weight, putting them solidly in the lead on day one. The Knoll’s smaller Sunday basket of 20.07 pounds was just enough to secure the win ahead of the second place team of Kevin Dahlhauser of Cottage Grove, WI and David Koller of Iron Mountain. The winners were consistent in their presentation, their location, and results. The Knoll’s impressive two-day weight of 64.23 pounds wowed the community. Their first MWC victory netted a whopping $25,000 check.

“We were mostly trolling with boards at 1.1 miles per hour using ¾ ounce bottom bouncers with 35’ of line behind the board,” shared Brad. Red or Fire Tiger Crawler-harness blades also helped secure the win. The team hunkered down 35 miles South of Marinette on a flat, two to three miles East of Gueno’s Reef. A number of teams fished in that area.

“A lot of locals were concerned that we had scheduled this tournament at the wrong time of year,” mentioned Kristine Houtman, Director of the MWC. “They are used to the bite turning on earlier in the season, and again in mid-August, but not in mid-July. But we knew that the caliber of professional MWC anglers would not only find the walleyes in the vast boundary we had given them, but also land them in the boat.” An impressive 1,018 fish were brought in weighing 3,781.17 pounds, averaging of 3.71 pounds. The Bay of Green Bay continues to impress all as a world-class fishery.

The weather stayed hot and humid throughout the weekend, with temperatures of 91 degrees on both days, but a Southwest wind on Sunday helped to bring in larger weights for the anglers. It also gave teams a challenging return back to the weigh-in site. Many ran 30 to 35 miles one way, and with the chop building in the afternoon had to allow for a two-hour ride.

The total payout for the event was $98,000, with $6770 in big fish pot. The Central Division team of the year payout brought $9,903 in earnings.

Number of Teams: 202
Number of Fish: 1018
Total Cash and Prizes: $115,673
Total Weight: 3,781.17 pounds
Water Temp: 76 degrees
Average Weight: 3.71 pounds
Water Level: Normal
Big Fish: 9.59 pounds
Water Clarity: Clear
Winning Pattern: Trolling with Crawler Harnesses

Jay Janny & Kim “Chief” Papineau take MWC Central Team of the Year

The MWC Central Division concluded at this tournament as well. Jay Janny of Eagle, WI and Kim “Chief” Papineau of Escanaba, MI captured the title with an impressive day two basket of 37.66 pounds. The five-fish basket took tournament honors. “We came into the tournament 5th place in points” said Chief. “We caught no fish the first two days of pre-fishing. None. The relief came on Sunday. After fishing three separate rock points we hit our first nine pounder fifteen minutes into our presentation. The other four were right on their heels.” The MWC Central Team of the Year purse was $6,435. The next four runners-up also cashed a bonus check of $867 each. Because of the MWC’s long tradition of encouraging family fishing, trophies were awarded to the Central Division Father/Son Team of the Year Matt and Bill Bobber of Appleton, WI and Husband/Wife Team of the Year honors to Ron and Vickie Goldapske of Van Dyne, WI.

One more tournament remains in the six-tournament season for the MWC. It will be the deciding factor for the MWC Challenge – where the top team is awarded overall MWC Team of the Year. Currently the top five teams are:
• Wayne Butz of Oneida, WI & Don Frederick of Appleton, WI
• Glenn Wangerin of Escanaba, MI & Gary Gray of Oshkosh, WI
• Mike Tompkins of Green Bay, WI & Travis McDonald of Menasha, WI
• Ed Klein of Wayne, IL & Randy Carroll of Oswego, IL
• Joe & David Okada of Madison, WI

Klein and Carroll may attempt a better East division tournament for their MWC Challenge points by picking up the Dunkirk, NY event and throwing out their Detroit River score. Even Janny and Papineau would have time to throw their hat into the MWC Challenge.

A $3,030 donation from the Walleye Conservation Fund was raised through the MWC event, which will funnel to the M & M Great Lakes Sport Fishermen. The Club, along with Marinette and Menominee Chambers of Commerce members, helped the MWC with tournament operations from boat inspection to weigh-in; and in turn will receive the funds for use in their local walleye stocking program to increase populations.

A majority of the field preferred driving a Ranger Boat, the presenting sponsor of the MWC Green Bay tournament. The Ranger Cup $1,000 payout was awarded to the top finishing Ranger boat owner participating in the Ranger Cup program, Rodney York of Centerville, MN and Jim Preissner of Hastings, MN.

The MWC title sponsor is Cabela’s. Other sponsors of the Masters Walleye Circuit are: Ranger Boats, Mercury Marine, Lindy Legendary Tackle, MotorGuide, Lowrance Electronics, The Outdoor Channel, North American Fishing Club, Salmo Performance Lures, Daiichi Hooks, Panther Marine, Aqua Innovations and Walleye Central.

Sick of it, post your real name if your going to complain about something. He's having a heck of year. Give credit where credit is do.

Dennis has helped many people on this website, and is always open to questions. If he has a good tournament, I'm going to say congrats, if you don't have the guts to post your name then don't post.
