| When you enter a dealership looking for a new or slightly used boat , how much can you expect to knock off the asking price? 10%? 20%? more? less? Are most dealers willing to negotiate? I'm new to the game and just looking for tips on how to get the best deal. |

| Good question! I have found that there is more room to negotiate price on a used rig. There doesn't seem to be a whole lot of discounting on a new one. That has been my expirience anyhow. I have shopped different dealers to compare prices and found their prices to be very close. Makes you wonder what is really going on. The spring boat shows are a good place to compare prices. I have gotten "deals" on non-current boats and motors, but there seems to be less of them out there these days. Most dealers don't keep much of an inventory anymore to avoid having leftovers. You can sometimes get the dealer to include some of the extras (batteries, spare tires, extra seats, covers etc..) in the purchase price. Buying a new truck is easier because it is pretty easy to find the invoice price. I think the mark up on a new boat and motor is very high. This should be a very interesting topic! |

| Come on guys, this should be a hot topic. My experiences are similar to other guest. When I look at a walleye boat that costs $40,000 or more and look at a pleasure boat in the same price range, it really makes me wonder how the walleye rig can sell for so much. |

Location: Rhinelander | I have worked in the industry my entire career, and can tell you the margin on boats is NOT high at all (RVs and campers are usually WAY higher margin items, for instance). When the standard retail price on any item is published dealer net and the dealer makes his living on his discounts, that isn't a great margin.
The overall average on new is about 14%. Some brands command a higher margin, some lower, and that has nothing to do with the product's stature or reputation. The retail is usually a result of the manufacturer's marketing and sales programs and practices; how many dealers in the market area, what kind of discounts for volume, etc are offered, and more.
It's not uncommon for a $40,000 rig to retail out with way less than a 10% margin. |
