![]() Member Posts: 2680 Location: Essexville, MI./Saginaw Bay. | They say when the cats away the mice will play. Well, in my case it's pay and not play. I'll explain. The wife is gone for the next week. She's staying on a pontoon boat with her girlfriends on Dale Hallow Reservoir in Tennessee. Of course this also includes a trip to Opera Land to see where Elvis started womanizing. The wife belongs to the Red Hat society and this qualifies as fun for them, so hey who am I to judge. Anyway, today was our 6th annual Labrador retrievers, bloody Mary, pig roast and skeet shoot get together, so all seemed good in comfort land. I had been waiting for this day all summer, to try out my new 3 1/2 inch Super Mag X2 Winchester. This hopefully would be my next duck/goose dream gun, as my Browning Gold Hunter developed a severe case of the Jam's last season. Anyway, long story short, I get off 3 shots and the SX2 jams. And not only that, but I missed all three skeet. De-Javous bummer in spades. So I barrow my buds Benellie Nova Pump and pop the next 22 skeet like they were hanging from a string. This is the same gun that Tom Knapp has the (hand thrown) skeet shooting record with. So, Being we're in different flights, I continue to use my buds Benellie and don't miss one target with it the rest of the afternoon. I've never had a gun fit so good to my style and stance of shooting. So on the way home I swing by Gander. They twist my arm and give me $570.00 for the X2. And why not, it was only shot 3 times. They then keep the pressure on by reducing the Nova price $392.00, out the door. Then you know and they knew that Ol' Capt. Dan just can't leave the store with found money, so I slip on over to the other side of the store and spend all the change on Bunk House Beef Jerky, Glass Shad Raps and Husky Jerks for the fall river season. This post will self destruct in 10 seconds. Edited by walleye express 8/24/2005 9:38 PM

Member Posts: 106 Location: Chilton, WI | You'll be happy with your new purchase Dan. Benelli makes a nice gun. I have a M1 semi-auto and I love it. They are very reliable guns also. I think you meant Tom Knapp, the guy that tosses up a bunch of clays by hand. I saw one of his shows at the Ducks Unlimited show one time. Very impressive! I saw him get nine clays with a semi-auto that time. I heard he beat his record recently though with ten in one toss.

| dan, you'll be very happy with the nova. i do allot of duck hunting with mine and they are very rugged. last fall i dropped mine in the mucky marsh, rinsed it off in the water and shot it the rest of the day with no trouble. and when you finally get home, it easily comes apart to clean all the crap out. not to mention coupling it with a primos jelly head super full choke tube, it becomes a wicked turkey gun. at 40 yards i had 28 pellets in the head and neck on a turkey target. i shoot winchester 3 1/2 inch high velocity #6 turkey loads. you got it for a great price. i got mine for $20.00 at the whitetails unlimited banquet 2 years ago in pinconning. enjoy...adam | |||

| Gander Mountain Co. came public at $16.00 per share in April 2004. Stock is currently at about $9.00, for a tidy 44% loss in less than a year and a half! I know Express's post was figurative.....but sure hope they get it together. I like the stores and enjoy shopping there. Never had a complaint with service, and pricing is competitive. Seems not enough people feel the same!?! Anyone else think the inability to sell via the internet or through catelog is a significant competitive disadvantage? | |||

The store was almost vacant except for the gun department, where I had to wait in line for the obviouos owners of these other 6 vehicles. One of the 3 workers said they had about 150 guns on layaway in the back room waiting to be picked up. I still like their stock of goods. They have virtually everything made for fishing or hunting. I do believe I'd order a lot more stuff from them if they had an internet order connection like BP or cabela's.

| Dan...very good choice on the Benelli. I am sure you sure like it a whole lot. I love my Benelli M-1 Super 90 (auto). I have never had it jam. I can keep my Browning Autos from jamming for a while by tearing them down and cleaning thoroughly....but being lazy...I just grab the Benelli, instead. The only other auto I have really good luck with...not jamming... is an old Beretta (1972 Vintage) I have. I expect you'll enjoy the Glass Shad Raps, too. | |||

![]() Member Posts: 2680 Location: Essexville, MI./Saginaw Bay. | T-Mac. I kinda think the Low Brass Fiochi's I was shooting yesterday had more to do with the SX2 jamming than anything else. When guns like that are built to digest 3 1/2 Magnum loads (especially auto's), they have a hard time functioning sometimes with the small Pop the (off brand) low brass creates. This Nova has the 28 inch barrel, but yet is some 4 to 5 inches shorter than the Winchester. You pull it up, and she's right on the target right now. No more temptation to close one eye. And I'm equally excited about the new Jointed/Suspending/Ratling shad raps I bought. These will really get those night river eye's attention. Edited by walleye express 8/25/2005 12:42 PM

| You should have expected the X2 to perform like the Gold Hunter - I believe that they are basically the same gun...at least the guts are the same. Same company, different look. | |||

Same company, different look. X2. You are correct in that assumption, and I knew that going in. Yet the testing stats I read for the X2 were better in several reguards on paper than was the Gold Hunter. And my Gold Hunter didn't actually start acting up for the first 2 years I owned it, and killed many ducks and geese. But similar to having a bad rod or reel, when it acts up in my hands she's gone the next day. I don't give second chances to inferior equipment. And I got the message loud, clear and early with the X2. Edited by walleye express 8/31/2005 9:18 AM

| Sounds like you did good on the Benelli deal. They make a good product. I get around to many Gander Mountain stores in the midwest and I have to say that the one in Appleton Wi. just plain sucks. They never have cashiers at the registers, they are usually out of stock on everything I need and their gun department is the worst. They have never given me a fair trade in price on a gun (I usually wind up keeping it or selling it outright). Their Wausau Wi. store on the other hand is fantastic. HUGE selection of everything, knowledgeable sales people, cashiers at the registers and they have given me better trade in prices on guns. I can see why their stock is $9 a share. | |||
