This is my first posting on any web site and I want to say hello to everyone! I seem to have a problem with my tachometer that runs a 1997 Johnson Fast Strike. When I turn the key I blow a fuse and everything is dead. I change the fuse unplug my tach and the motor will start. My Question is does anyone know what is causing this or had heard of a similar problem. Thanks.

Sounds like a dead short in the tach wiring or the harness. First I'd check the back of the tach to be sure all the wires are tight and not touching each other, check the wiring and last resort, change out the Tach.

Thank you for the quick response. This problem has happened to me once before back in July and to fix it I replaced the wiring harness and the tach. I realize I need a mechanic on this one or an electrician ha. It seems odd that the problem would come back after I put on at least 40-60 hours on. The end of the season almost here for me so I have a nice winter project on my hands. Other than a ground problem where else could I look? Thanks again for your help.

Hawk! If you have a multimeter you can set it on ohms and check the resistance of the wires. If there is continuity between the hot supply wires it's ok, if not it may be an internal problem. However, if it reads zeor to ground you have a dead short. Just make sure you disconnect it from the power source before you take a resistance reading.
