Got a call from the producer of the new Cabelas outdoor show "In the Field" last night. This show is the one where you send in your amateur video of hunting or fishing trips and they put it on the air after some censoring (In my case) and some editing in others. I bought a Magnavox Movie maker video cam way back in 1987 and taped many of my charter trips for years, on both the Tittabawassee River for walleyes and the Pere Marquette for Salmon and Steelhead during those years. I'd film and use the tapes as advertisement for my charter/guide service when I'd go to the spring fishing shows. After review of the two tapes I sent them, Cabela's has decided to accept and air one from each river. The producer said they probably won't air for a couple months given the edit time and schedule of shows already laid down, but I'm excited about the news.

At this point I can only speculate what they will and won't use. But after talking with the guy, I think I know what filmed trips he's going to use. If any of you remember what the fishing was like back in the late 80's early 90's on either river, you know the fishing (and catching) was awesome. The one they'll use from the Tittabawassee (I think) was taken back on New Year's Eve day 1989. I start off that day on film by catching a very rare 8 pound steelhead on a jig and minnow with the very first cast. After that the action only gets better, with 5 pound walleyes the norm and coming in two at a time. It should also include me catching and releasing a 10 pound female that was as fat as a drum near the end of the tape.

The Pere Marquette River film was in December and was a two consecutive day trip, just after a huge snowstorm in 1991 or 92, even I forget now. I ran between Gleasons Landing (just below the flies only water) to Bowmans Bridge on both days. In those two days we caught and filmed most of the 17 Steelheads we landed, but keep only 2 that my clients put on their walls. One a 36" 16 pounder and the other a 12 pounder. The end of that first day and the picture of these two fish are posted below. When I find out the actual air day of either show, I'll post the times for those interested.

Dan,

Thats great!! Does this guy from Cabelas know how many tapes you have that he can choose from? Is he prevented from using any tapes from the T.V. shows? If not, I'd suggest the tape from that float trip with that HUGE KING. Of course, as excited as you got, they would probably have to edit out most of the audio on that one!!

Capt., I can only think that you thought I may have posted that rude reply, but I can assure you it wasn't.

Congrats btw.

Juls.

I absolutley (did not) think it was you that posted the remark. I still feel the same way about you and Rick as I always have. I admire and respect both of you for what you've accomplished in your lives, and I don't see any circumstances changing my feelings on the matter. In fact the remark wasn't even aimed as a slam agains't WC. Its that I just recongnized the IP of Mr. (Who Cares) as one of my old groupies from that board.

And Jack.

Nope, they can't and won't use any tape, other than Amateur video shot by (Joe Blow) or his buddies, on any hunting or fishing trip. Thats the format of the show including all bloopers and fuzzy tight frame mistakes people make while doing their own filming.

And Jack, remember this thread http://walleye.outdoorsfirst.com/board/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=2... I wish I would have had the camera along on that trip. I could have made $10,000.00 on Funniest Home Movies.

Dan, for the guys out there who have no idea what you are speaking of in 1989, let me go back. On new years day, 1989, there were so many big hogs in the saginaw system. We were renting shanty's on the saginaw river to the toon of 8 per day. While sitting on a bucket next to my fishin' buddy, shantys all rented, where the saginaw river starts, we, well, he, managed to ice a 13.06# and 11.something pound walleye 5 minutes apart and all I could get was those pesky 5 and 6 pounders.....oh yea, it was one after another that day as well. I grew up in Freeland on the Tittabawassee river and moved away like the auto industry did in 1990. Winter steelheading in wisconsin is non-existant compared to michigan streams. Sometimes i long to be back in them times. Thanks for jostling my memory!!

Me too.

I called 2 of his old numbers and one of his old e-mail adresses yesterday when I thought of this thread, and all were disconnected. You still know where he is Jack?
