Who here spends time on the ice for Walleyes? I'm wondering what your early ice favorite pattern is. I fish the Rhinelander, WI area, and do really well first ice in very shallow water in the backs of weedy bays at night, less that 4'. I'm jigging and setting two tip ups with golden shiners.

"Ice is for mixed Drinks"........ Sorry, just had to say it. My favorite early ice technique is plowing through the ice with my boat OR changing locations so that I can still fish out of my boat.............. You asked

Dennis.
Make yourself some time this winter, call me, and I'll make you a believer in ice fishing. No charge. :o

Steve.
First Ice around here is kinda weird. Even though we see a few walleyes during first ice in shallow water while fishing for perch, very few if any seem interested in biting anything during that time. Transversely, when last ice time comes, shallow water walleyes put on the feed bag big time. Whereas the River walleyes seem to bite at any stage of the ice formation. Jigging spoons and Jigging Rapalas are the favorites on either body of water. I started experimenting last winter with Mooselook spoons. They are really light spoons, so I added some old Storm weight strips on the back of them. Heres a picture of what a Silver/Blue Mooselook tipped with a 1/2 Blue Shiner can do.
