Member Posts: 106 Location: Chilton, WI | I'm in the market for a map card that covers WI, a few well know lakes in MN like Leach Lake and Lake Michigan including the Bay of Green Bay and Big and Little BDN. Can anyone reccomend a good map card for me? I was looking at the Navionics, I have a WI Navionics card and I like it a lot. Is there a big difference in the Gold card versus the others? Any information would be great. Thanks.

Member Posts: 106 Location: Chilton, WI | So the premium card is the way to go? I was just on their site looking at all the lakes and rivers it covers but couldn't find much info on the differences of the Premium and the Gold. It looks like the Premium has more detailed contour lines in the picture but thats all I could find for info on it.

Member Posts: 1656 | Scrap, the new premium chips bundled a few chips together to offer more. There are some premium chps out there that offer better contours. I've seen and used, but I couldn't spell out the name or exact specifics between the premium and gold. At one time Gold was considered the chip to use for color units. But now that isn't much of an issue.

Member Posts: 106 Location: Chilton, WI | Thanks for all the info guys. It looks like the premium chip is the way to go then. The Navionics site says the premium chip is compatible with my unit (LMS 480M). It seems like a good investment as it will work on color units also, which I plan to purchase in the near future.

Member Posts: 363 Location: Kaukauna WI | Scrap Iron How long until you decide to purchase a Color unit? I love the Premium Chip but have found it to run really slow in your 480 is why I ask. Don’t wish you to buy the chip and then think you have a problem due to the unit (LMS 480) not having enough power to run that 256 meg chip at speeds you wish. . Member Posts: 106 Location: Chilton, WI | I'm glad you brought that to my attention Michael. I will have to look into that. I don't see myself buying a color unit untill I'm out of college which will be another year. When you say it runs kind of slow in the 480 what exactly are the problems then? Does it not update you position on the map fast enough? Thanks for the heads up on that.

Member Posts: 363 Location: Kaukauna WI | Scrap Iron, It is that the units as a whole works slow when reading the bigger card. I believe but am not positive it is due to the processor just like in a computer or car if not enough power you don’t go to fast. Navionics has a Classic Chip which will do well in this unit for the time being. Then when you are ready to upgrade you can get a premium chip and maximize the advances of the unit you purchase and new information available from Navionics for they are always making electrionic maps better. It does run slower thatn in my LCX 104, but it works just fine. My boat goes 53 mph and I have never out ran my mapping unit. The only time it gets frustrating is sitting in the parking lot trying to show your friends something on your GPS screen. I think you would be just fine with the Premium Chip in that unit.

Member Posts: 363 Location: Kaukauna WI | Thanks John for that information and update. I have just played with the unit when doing in store visits and in freinds boats. From there I gathered the data, knowlege and concerns I expressed.
