Member Posts: 1314 Location: Menasha, WI | Saw this posted elsewhere and thought it may be of interest here: Sheriff’s Department: Get shanties off the lake The Reporter staff The Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Department is warning sturgeon spearers to get their shanties off the southern end of Lake Winnebago this morning. “Ice conditions deteriorated overnight,” said Chief Deputy Mick Fink. “And some of the shanties are tipping into the water.” The most dangerous area, Fink said, appears to be on the southern end east of the Lakeside Park lighthouse and west of Schmitty’s Oar House, N7044 Winnebago Drive. Fink watched from the southern shore near Garden Drive about 9:15 a.m. as several spearers towed their shanties in with ATVs. At least six shanties are sinking into the lake, he said. “There’s a big open spot of water out there, and apparently there is a warm undercurrent that is eating away at the underside of the ice,” he said. “I’ve talked to people who have been going out there for 35 years and they said they’ve never seen anything like this.” Fink said he’s getting mixed reports on how fast the water is opening and how much has opened. One spearer told him another 10 acres of open water appeared on the lake over night, another told him open water moved 150 yards south. “If the wind keeps up from the west, even though temperatures are below freezing, we think it’s just going to keep getting worse,” he said. http://www.fdlreporter.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060213/FON0...

Member Posts: 194 | I had to leave the lake at about 11 today, but i had heard later in the day where we are fishing off fisherman road, the ice was doing some shoving and thus rearanding the shanty location while some guys were in them, heard it was quite a rush
