Wisconsin boaters will benefit from state grants

More than $631,000 in grants has been awarded to eight Wisconsin communities and associations for the improvement of recreational boating in their areas, Gov. Jim Doyle has announced.

The grants were approved last month by the Wisconsin Waterways Commission, and announced by the governor this week. Funds for the grants come from the state Water Resources Account, and are raised through a formula transfer of excise tax on gasoline used for marine purposes.

The grants include $236,747 for the town of Garfield in Polk County to relocate and redevelop a single-lane launch to Lake Wapogasset. Improvements also include a paved parking area and accessible boarding dock.

Waupaca County will receive $73,200 to repair and improve the existing Shaw’s Landing launch to the Wolf River, and the city of Kewaunee in Kewaunee County will receive $35,360 to replace two existing accessible boarding docks and add a third accessible dock, providing access to Lake Michigan.

The remaining funds are slated to go toward water treatments, water studies and other development.

Sounds like allot of money until one looks at what it costs to build a ramp. Still, it's good news.
