Subject: New to the River

Wondering if anyone could provide a general pattern for targeting walleyes on the river through early spring, areas around Red Wing. Fished it once-caught a few eyes. Don't fish the rivers, but thought I might try. Friends said things can get fun out there w/ a lot of action at times. Just lookin for something to do til' the lakes open. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

KC, for someone unfamiliar with the Red Wing area my advice would be to concentrate your efforts within a 1/2 mile of the dam area. Within this relatively small area you can catch fish useing all of the technics that work up and down the entire river system. Here are a handfull of generalities for fishing this area. First of all if it's mostly walleyes you are after concentrate your efforts in 15ft of water or less. This area has several sand flats, rip rap shorelines, and a few wingdams that hold many walleyes throughout the winter months. Casting plastics. jig minnow combo's, or blade baits will take fish on most days. Just remember, fish slooow. If It's saugers you target, stay deeper than 15ft, generally 20 to 25ft in the winter months, and vertical jig the same baits you would use for walleyes only with a heavier jig. Another technic that works very well for me is to slowly troll stickbaits upstream on three way rigs. Please remember that I am painting with a pretty broad brush here and things need to be tunned and refined on a daily basis. Good luck and hope this helps.
